White Bridge in Neustrelitz: Pedestrian closure due to painting work!

In Neustrelitz, the White Bridge over Lake Zierker will be closed for a few days. The reason for this is urgent painting work that now needs to be carried out. This particularly affects pedestrian traffic, which has to use a detour through the “Zur Weiße Brücke” residential area. The diversion leads off to the left just before the laundry rinsing house and goes through the newer residential area that was built between 2016 and 2020. The railing of the White Bridge used to be dilapidated, but has been repaired and repainted in recent years, so that the bridge now shines again in a fresh splendour. Northern Courier reported.

The White Bridge is not only a popular crossing for pedestrians, but also part of the picturesque surroundings of Neustrelitz, which extends directly on Lake Zierker. The bridge leads over a short branch canal that connects a beautiful landscape and leads past the laundry house to the historic Slavic village of Neustrelitz.

Neustrelitz – A city with history

Neustrelitz, the residential town in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, has an important history. From 1733, Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich III. of Mecklenburg-Strelitz built the city as a late baroque planned city. This measure was necessary after the original residence fell victim to a city fire in 1712. The baroque cityscape, unique in Europe, with the eight-pointed street star gives Neustrelitz its special charm. The famous student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, shaped the cityscape in the 19th century with numerous important buildings. The website explains more about this Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The Kammerkanal, which was built between 1840 and 1842 according to Buttel's plans, enables a navigable connection to Berlin and Hamburg. The harbor at Zierker See has also established itself as a popular water hiking spot. The opening of the railway lines to Stralsund and Rostock in the late 1800s promoted and facilitated tourism and brought new visitors to the city.

Cultural center of the Lake District

Neustrelitz is still a cultural center of the lake district today. In summer, operettas and musicals are performed in the castle garden and the plastic gallery in the castle church shows important figurative plastic works from May to September. The city is known not only for its impressive history and architecture, but also for the active cultural life promoted by the many personalities who worked here, including linguists and landscape painters. The residential city profile is strongly influenced by the Neustrelitz State Theater, which opened as a court theater in 1769.

With its ideal location as the gateway to the Müritz National Park and Feldberg Lake District Nature Park, Neustrelitz is also the perfect starting point for hikers, cyclists and boaters. The city can be easily reached via long-distance cycle paths and water hiking routes and of course also by car or train. Anyone who sets out on a journey to Neustrelitz is sure to discover something unique - both through nature and through the rich culture.
