Drunk driver crashes car into village pond - injuries!
A shocking incident occurred on Sunday in Cambs, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. An 80-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while making a right-hand curve. The result? His car overturned and landed upside down in a nearby village pond, which is about half a meter deep. Fortunately, the driver only suffered minor injuries and was immediately taken to hospital to receive treatment for his wounds. Stern reports that the police found a breath alcohol level of over two per mille while recording the accident, which led to the immediate revocation of his driver's license. He is now being investigated for drunk driving.
Drunk driving remains a serious problem in Germany. A current survey shows that almost 37,200 alcohol-related traffic accidents were registered in Germany in 2023. These had devastating consequences: almost 18,900 people were injured or killed. The average of about 102 accidents per day is alarming. Such data makes it clear that the lifestyle behind the wheel carries significant risks. According to Statista, the risk of accidents is already increased with a blood alcohol level of 0.3 per mille. The legal limit for motor vehicle drivers is 0.5 per mille, while novice drivers and drivers under the age of 21 have a strict zero alcohol limit.
The alarming statistics
The significance of these numbers is underlined by statistics from VPV. In 2023, around 15,652 of these personal injury accidents occurred, with 198 people losing their lives. Although the number of alcohol-related accidents was reduced by 4.1 percent compared to the previous year, these statistics are worryingly high compared to the years 2019 to 2021. It is evident: alcohol abuse while driving has fatal consequences and should not be taken lightly.
The 80-year-old age group in particular could be viewed as a risk group. As the incident in Cambs shows, the consequences are risky not only for the driver himself, but also for innocent road users. Road discretion and responsibility are essential to preventing such incidents and ensuring safety on our roads.
