Matzlow invests 2.9 million euros in a new elementary school!
The primary school in Matzlow is currently undergoing extensive change. The demolition work on the old school buildings began at the beginning of the summer holidays and Mayor Sebastian Fynnau provides insights into the progress of the construction work. “The area has now been cleared and the sand slabs have been prepared,” said the mayor. A promising step, because the floor slabs are to be cast this year to give the new building the necessary foundation.
With a total cost of around 2.9 million euros, the construction costs for the new buildings are not low. What is interesting is that the municipality covers half of these costs, while the district covers the other half. The historical charm of the region remains intact. The 150-year-old, listed building of the old village school remains untouched, while classes temporarily take place in a building from 1985. There are currently 111 students in five classes taught by six teachers.
New concept for a modern school
The plans for the new buildings are clearly ambitious: two classrooms, a new administration, a children's kitchen and a large atrium for events are in the pipeline. The move to the current school building was carried out by teachers and parents themselves - a joint project that underlines the cohesion in the community.
It is pleasing that the school was the first institution to receive funding from the school construction program. The first plans for the new building go back six years, but Mayor Fynnau vehemently criticized the long wait for approval. In the last few weeks, despite the completed sand slabs, there has been no further visible progress on the construction site.
Monument preservation with funding
The initiative of the Minister of State for Culture to promote monument protection projects throughout Germany also has a broader context. The current budget provides additional funds of 35 million euros for the fourteenth monument protection special program, kulturstaatsminister.de informed. This funding is of great importance for many medium-sized construction and craft businesses and also includes the renovation of historical buildings. Federal participation in such projects can amount to up to 50 percent of the eligible costs.
There is no denying that preserving the cultural landscape and supporting local crafts are important to preserve the history and identity of the region. Applications for the funds are made via the state's responsible monument protection offices. Anyone interested should submit their application by November 30, 2025 - shorter deadlines apply in some federal states.
Incidentally, the new building in Matzlow is scheduled to be completed in February 2027. The local company Josl from Spornitz has been awarded the contract for the shell construction and will continue to monitor the progress of the work.
