Burglar caught despite entry ban: hidden stolen goods discovered!
On July 14, 2025, a wanted burglar was caught at the German-Polish border crossing in Pomellen. The 45-year-old Romanian was traveling on the A11 motorway from Stettin to Berlin when the police arrested him. An arrest warrant had previously been issued against him by the Kiel public prosecutor's office after he had already been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for house burglary. Interestingly, he had already served part of his sentence and was actually scheduled to be deported to his homeland in February 2025. However, this plan failed because the remainder of his sentence was suspended and he was also banned from re-entering the country, as Nordkurier reports.
During the arrest, investigators found a considerable amount of valuable items in the man's vehicle - including silver cutlery, silver serving plates, jewelry and watches - the origin of which is still unclear. Police believe these items came from Scandinavia and have confiscated them for further investigation. The man is now being prosecuted on suspicion of receiving stolen property.
Legal framework
Entry bans are a serious matter in Germany. As soon as a foreigner is threatened with deportation or expulsion, he or she usually receives an entry ban. According to Fachanwalt, such a ban can be imposed for a certain period of time, but not longer than five years. In serious cases, the deadline can even be extended to up to ten years if the person concerned poses a threat to public safety.
The Residence Act (§ 11 AufenthG) stipulates that a deported or expelled foreigner may not leave the country again. Entry and residence bans are recorded in the Central Register of Foreigners, INPOL and the Schengen Information System (SIS). Anyone who does not comply and re-enters the country illegally will face severe penalties. These can result in up to three years in prison or high fines.
The consequences of criminal proceedings
Criminal proceedings against foreign nationals can have far-reaching consequences. Many of those affected are often unaware of the consequences and go into interrogations unprepared, which can have fatal effects on their residence status, as anwalt.de describes. A final conviction can lead to expulsion, especially for serious crimes.
The seriousness of the crime plays an important role when weighing up the interest in deportation and the interest in staying. In the event of a conviction involving a fine of more than 90 daily rates, the immigration authorities are usually informed, which often leads to a report to the relevant authorities. It is therefore advisable for foreign defendants to seek legal advice in good time in order to avoid possible negative consequences and to secure their right of residence.
The arrested Romanian will now be taken to the prison in Neustrelitz, where he will have to serve the remaining two and a half months of his sentence. The proceedings involve further investigation and it remains to be seen how the case will develop.
