Film enjoyment about Usedom: InselLicht” in Rostock’s Kunsthalle!
On Thursday, July 17, 2025, art lovers in Rostock can expect a very special event. The film “InselLicht – Usedomer Bilder” by Heinz Brinkmann will be shown at the Kunsthalle Rostock at 6 p.m. The film, produced in 2005, revolves around the fascinating art scene on the island of Usedom and highlights the influences that mass tourism has on the region's artistic identity. Director Heinz Brinkmann, who died in 2019 and was born in the seaside resort of Heringsdorf, allows the voices of numerous artists such as Sabine Curio, Volker Köpp and Matthias Wegenhaupt to have their say in his work.
Before the film screening, there is the opportunity to visit the “Usedomer Lights” exhibition, which starts in advance at 4 p.m. with a curator's tour. This impressive collection includes 24 artistic positions ranging from the 1930s to the present. The works come from well-known artists, including Otto Niemeyer-Holstein and Oskar Manigk, and show atmospheric landscapes, portraits and still lifes that perfectly capture the attitude to life on the island. The artwork “Work and Recreation II (Am Fischerstrand)” from 1953/54 could be a highlight that can be seen in the art gallery.
Strengthen artistic tradition
The “Usedomer Lights” exhibition is more than just a compilation of beautiful images. It addresses the discussion of questions of nature, light and contemporary history and focuses on the relevance of community in today's context. Since the 19th century, the island of Usedom has attracted a number of artists who found and continue to find creative freedom there. The current collection includes works by both classic artists and younger talents such as Oskar Manigk and Matthias Wegenhaupt, who continue the tradition of their role models and at the same time break new ground.
After the film screening, the organizers invite you to discuss the film and the artists presented, accompanied by Melanie Ohst, the curator of the exhibition. Visitors can look forward to an exciting evening full of art and inspiring conversations. Admission to the event begins at 5:30 p.m., and the regular admission price of €6 includes participation fees for the curator's tour and the film screening.
Entertainment and enjoyment in the café
For anyone who gets hungry during the event, there will be a special “island cocktail” and small snacks in the Kunsthalle’s café to round off the cultural delights. In a relaxed atmosphere, visitors can not only admire the art, but also end the evening with a cool drink.
The event is sponsored by the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock as well as other local institutions and represents an important contribution to the region's cultural scene. This shows once again how much the city is committed to promoting art and culture, and that the connection between education, art and community is of central importance. For everyone who is interested in the art scene and the cultural peculiarities of Usedom, this evening is an absolute must!
