Fishing festival remains colorful: PETA plan is making waves in Rostock!

The fishing festival in Rostock is facing an exciting challenge. On June 14, 2025, the Peta organization made a name for itself by presenting an unusual offer: It offered to donate 500 vegan sushi if the well-known Fischerfest was renamed Vischerfest and the menu was changed to purely vegan food. But this offer was not well received. The Northern Courier reports that Großmarkt Rostock GmbH, headed by Inga Knospe, firmly rejected this request.

Knospe justified the decision by emphasizing that the folk festival should remain a celebration for everyone and must reflect the diversity of the culinary offerings. Knospe received support from Julia Kristin Pittasch, the chairwoman of the FDP/Independents in the Rostock citizenship. Pittasch recalled that the Fishermen's Festival has been celebrated since 1963 and that the traditional connection to fish and other attractions should not be lost. “Diversity means freedom of choice,” says Pittasch.

The reactions from the population

But it wasn't just the organizers who were active in the discussion. A local resident expressed that vegan food should not be forced, but suggested setting up a stall with Peta's offerings - but without coercion. This shows how differentiated the views of the population are. With the “Respect fish, instead of filleting” campaign, Peta itself aims to prevent the killing of fish for meals and points out vegan alternatives.

The 60th Fishing Festival will take place at the Schwanenteich from June 20th to 22nd. The festival opens on Friday at 4 p.m. with a dealer mile and a varied stage program. Saturday will be celebrated as a family day, on which there will be numerous activities, a cake bazaar and performances in the evening, including by “Rena the Band”. On the last day of the festival, the event begins at 11 a.m. with a church service, followed by a colorful program until 4 p.m.

Vegan nutrition and its challenges

But what about the vegan diet in general? According to the German Society for Nutrition There are many different opinions on the vegan diet. For example, while the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the USA considers a well-planned vegan diet to be beneficial for all age groups, some European specialist societies recommend paying particular attention to the intake of vitamin B12 due to the risks of nutrient deficiency.

There are also few meaningful studies on the nutrient supply of vegan people in Germany. Medical care and qualified nutritional advice is advisable for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, children and seniors. Ultimately, vegan nutrition remains an exciting topic that brings with it both opportunities and challenges.

The coming weeks will show how the Fischerfest responds to the ongoing discussion about vegan options and whether further culinary alternatives can be added to the offering. The interplay of tradition and modern nutritional approaches will continue to be a topic of conversation in the Hanseatic city.
