Rostock's schools are starting with new vigor: top equipment for 800 students!

In Rostock-Lichtenhagen it's time to celebrate an exciting start to school! The new school year at the Hundertwasser Comprehensive School begins on September 8th, and with a breath of fresh air. Around 800 students will move into the classrooms, which will have an ambience that is both modern and inviting. A total of 16,390 students will start at municipal schools in the Hanseatic city, while a further 5,364 children will expand their knowledge at independent schools. 1,831 students can also look forward to their first day of school.

The Hundertwasser Comprehensive School has changed significantly in recent years. Municipal investments have led to the ninth sports hall being newly opened on Pablo Picasso Street. Steffen Bockhahn, Senator for Youth and Social Affairs, emphasizes how important these measures are in order to cover the high investment needs. The Alexander Schmorell vocational school has also opened its doors in the new building, setting an example for the future training and development of young people.

Redesign of the outdoor areas

Another highlight is the comprehensive renovation of the Hundertwasser Comprehensive School's outdoor facilities, which is currently being carried out at a cost of around four million euros. The work is scheduled to be completed by December 2025. After a while of waiting, the students will now be able to receive two new schoolyards, which will significantly improve the quality of their stay. With new play options for climbing, gymnastics and ball games, the schoolyard becomes the children's new favorite place.

The old school building from 1976 was extensively renovated in 2005, and yet the outdoor facilities had not received the necessary attention to date. The renovation will be carried out in two construction phases, with the 1st construction phase affecting the west school yard and the 2nd construction phase affecting the east school yard. Under the supervision of KOE Rostock, the company works hand in hand with the city's school administration office.

Digitalization in schools

But Rostock doesn't just have its finger on the pulse when it comes to breaks. The Hanseatic city has also made progress in digitalization. 98.5 percent of the funding from the DigitalPakt School was drawn down. All 44 municipal schools are now equipped with digital boards and benefit from seamless WiFi. In addition, around 3,800 mobile devices and computers were distributed to the schools in order to make teaching even more modern and efficient.

The planned addition of an elevator at the Hundertwasser Comprehensive School, which began in 2022, will further improve accessibility and give all students access to knowledge. At the school it is clear that we not only invest in the present, but also think about the future.

Rostock clearly shows that they have a good knack for driving forward the education offensive. The combination of renovation and digitalization ensures that not only the students, but also the teachers and parents can look forward to a successful school year. The investments are high, the anticipation is even more so!
