Five injured in dramatic bus accident in Ludwigsburg!
A shocking incident occurred on Sunday evening in Ludwigsburg when a 54-year-old driver overlooked a moving bus while changing into the bus lane. The collision took place around 6:30 p.m. on Schorndorfer Strasse near the district court. Five passengers, ranging in age from 14 to 74, were slightly injured in the accident. Luckily, the bus driver was able to brake hard to prevent anything worse from happening. According to initial estimates, the material damage amounts to around 10,000 euros. The police have now confirmed the incident and started investigating. Tixio also reports on the shocking details.
Just a few months ago, on November 13, 2024, there was another serious accident in Ludwigsburg. Three buses collided at the central bus station when a 39-year-old driver overlooked another bus while turning. The other bus driver, 66 years old, was injured in a serious side collision and had to be taken to hospital. The material damage in this incident totaled around 60,000 euros, but all three buses were able to return to the depot independently. According to Ludwigsburg24, the passengers and the other drivers were fortunately left unscathed. While Bahnhofstrasse in the direction of Keplerstrasse had to be closed for two hours, there were no major traffic disruptions overall.
Road safety situation in Germany
The past accidents highlight general road safety in Germany, which, according to Statista, counted around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in 2023. This number has increased over the last few decades, particularly due to increasing traffic. While the number of accidents is increasing sharply, the number of personal injuries remains at a similar level to the 1950s.
In Germany, 34 people die on the roads per million inhabitants, which is below the EU average. Nevertheless, the number of traffic deaths remains a current issue, especially since “Vision Zero”, i.e. the goal of no longer registering traffic deaths by 2050, is being pursued by the EU transport ministers. Great attention is paid to the most common causes of accidents, which include insufficient distance, improper speeds and drunk driving. In 2023, approximately 15,700 alcohol-related accidents occurred, resulting in 193 deaths and approximately 18,686 injuries.
With a critical look at these numbers, it is essential that both car drivers and bus drivers take responsibility and show consideration for each other in order to minimize the risk on the roads. It remains to be hoped that preventative measures can reduce the number of accidents in the future.
