Recall alert: Listeria in fish and cheese – Attention for consumers!

In the last few days there has been a significant double recall of foodstuffs, particularly affecting consumers in northern Germany. The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has raised the alarm because several products from Rewe and other supermarkets could be contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria. The recalls include cheese as well as various fish products, none of which should be taken lightly.

Those affected include the popular smoked herring fillets from the Rügen Fisch brand and raclette cheese from the Entremont brand. These products may contain listeria, which poses serious health risks, especially for at-risk groups such as pregnant women, newborns, seniors and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of a listeria infection can be unpleasant and include fever, diarrhea and other flu-like symptoms. The incubation period, which can extend over a period of eight days to eight weeks, is particularly worrying, as Ruhr24 states.

The recall in detail

The first recall concerns raclette cheese in different pack sizes: 125g, 200g and 1kg, with best-before dates until November 27, 2025. Customers should look for the “Entremont” marking when checking their stocks. In addition to Rewe, the affected supermarkets include Dohle, Edeka, Globus and Netto, to name just a few.

The second recall relates to seven fish products that are primarily available in Rewe:

  • Ostsee Fisch Feine Heringsfilets nach Matjesart (300g)
  • Ostsee Fisch Edle Matjesfilet (150g)
  • Ostsee Fisch Kräutermatjes (150g)
  • Ostsee Fisch Räuchermatjesfilet (150g)
  • Saßnitz Fisch Edler Matjes Nordischer Art (300g)
  • Saßnitz Fisch Kräuter Matjes nach Rügen Art (250g)
  • Saßnitz Fisch Rauch Matjes Nordischer Art (250g)

The best-before dates for these products extend to November 27, 2025, and here too there is no precise information on the type of bacteriological contamination, which does not make the matter any less worrying. All products mentioned should be returned immediately, even without a receipt, as the purchase price will be refunded.

It's better to be safe than sorry

Consumers are well advised to check the products they have purchased in the coming days and, if in doubt, to avoid consuming them to be on the safe side. Listeria in particular is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, which is urgently warned by Merkur. A doctor should be consulted at the slightest signs of infection.

Amid these recalls, it remains important to also pay attention to the quality of the food we consume. If you don't want to rely on the mass-produced products in supermarkets, you can always visit the local bakeries. These often offer fresh baked goods that go beyond supermarket quality. An online directory like Bäckerei nearby helps to find the best offers in the area and thus support local businesses.

Food safety awareness is more important than ever. Stay alert and safe - it's in your hands!
