Sassnitz celebrates: Ferris wheel Olympics in the harbor days!
The Rügen Harbor Days in Sassnitz are attracting tens of thousands of visitors this year. Under the motto “Holiday and Homeland Club” a colorful hustle and bustle will begin in the port city from July 11th to 13th, 2025. The highlight of the festival is the newly built “Ostsee-Stern” Ferris wheel, which was built especially for this event and is finally in operation. Northern Courier reports that after this big celebration, the Ferris wheel will remain in Sassnitz until October 3rd. Its impressive height of 35 meters and 24 gondolas offer space for up to 144 people and provide a spectacular view of the harbor and the Baltic Sea.
A second Ferris wheel, operated by Jimmy Blume and located at the Glasbahnhof, remains closed during port days. This measure is based on a gentlemen’s agreement with the operator of the Ostsee-Stern. The Ferris wheel's lighting will be maintained and repaired during this time. Although the Blumes Ferris wheel is not in operation, the recently mentioned Baltic Sea Star provides the necessary variety and attraction.
Tourist attractions and future prospects
Sassnitz has increasingly established itself as a tourist destination in recent years. The new Ferris wheel, which was built on June 20th and 21st, is intended to attract passers-by to the harbor and increase the attractiveness of the region. The news report that Thomas Kaul, the investor behind this project, is also planning other projects, including building a hotel in the historic Glasbahnhof. These new initiatives could help the city sustainably increase its visitor numbers and revitalize its tourist attractions.
There are already important sights in the area around the harbor, such as the submarine museum and the newly opened old freight yard, which also contribute to Sassnitz's attractiveness. Planned events such as a summer reception with over 250 guests next weekend and a concert by the Symphonic Youth Orchestra on July 19th promise additional momentum and a good atmosphere in the harbor.
Events and exciting experiences
The harbor days not only offer an extensive program, but are also ideal for families. The fare for the Ferris wheel is 7 euros for adults, while children up to a height of 1.40 meters can ride for 5 euros. A family ticket for two adults and two children also costs just 5 euros. With six laps per trip and short stops, fun is guaranteed for all age groups.
Sassnitz has an eventful history and was made a city in 1957. In addition to the new Ferris wheel, other cultural offerings such as the Rügen-Galerie shopping street, historic fishing buildings, and indoor activities such as the butterfly park are also very popular. A look at Tripadvisor shows that Sassnitz has a variety of attractions to offer that delight visitors.
With these initiatives and events, the city of Sassnitz hopes to attract not only locals but also many holidaymakers to the region and spread a positive feeling of community and joy at the port. The harbor days promise a celebration for the whole family and a step towards a hopefully prosperous future.
