Schwerin calls for more cybersecurity: Prime Minister announces investments!

Yesterday's IHK annual reception in Schwerin was an impressive event with around 300 guests from politics, society and business. The motto of the event was not chosen by chance: “Cybersecurity as a success factor”. In his speech, President Matthias Belke emphasized the urgency of cybersecurity for the future of companies. “We are in a time in which the economic situation is more serious than politicians recognize,” said Belke in a clear announcement that points to the current uncertainty in the economy. Tagesschau reports that the President was particularly committed to small and medium-sized companies and called for the establishment of regional competence centers.

The new cash situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania plays a central role here. At the event, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) announced investments amounting to 3.3 billion euros for the coming financial years. This includes 270 million euros for broadband expansion and fast internet. “We have to invest in digital infrastructure so that our companies remain competitive,” said Schwesig.

Cybersecurity as a key issue

The relevance of cybersecurity for location policy and economic protection strategies has been emphasized again and again. According to a Bitkom study, 87 percent of German companies were affected by theft, espionage or sabotage last year. The damage caused by cyber attacks amounted to over 200 billion euros - around 70 percent of the total damage to the economy. LinkedIn highlights, how important it is to talk about digital resilience to counteract this trend.

In his presentation, cybersecurity expert Linus Neumann emphasized the need for increased IT prevention. “Protection starts with people and not just with technology,” added Belke, pointing out the essential role of training in the area of safety. The IHK wants to become more involved here.

Overall, the annual reception was not only a platform for important discussions about the digital future, but also a place for exchange for actors from across the state. Thanks went to all guests and the IHK team for the successful organization of this event, which will be remembered impressively.
