Purchasing power alarm in MV: Citizens have to get by on little money!
A lot is happening in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but the local people only feel the positive changes to a limited extent. According to a current study by the research institute Acxiom, purchasing power in MV is at the lowest level of all federal states. While the average purchasing power in Germany rises to 27,925 euros per capita, the value in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remains well behind the national average at just 24,179 euros. This means that many households are having to limit themselves more and more, which is putting considerable pressure on them given the rising cost of living. According to the Nordkurier, Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania benefit far less from increased wages, salaries and state transfers than other regions.
The situation is particularly dramatic in the Western Pomerania region, especially in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The average purchasing power here is 22,941 euros, which is almost 5,000 euros below the national average. In comparison, the state capital Schwerin has the highest purchasing power in MV with at least 25,271 euros per capita, which only puts it in 323rd place in the Germany-wide ranking. These values make it clear that the financial situation of many people in MV is anything but rosy.
Purchasing power in comparison
In the context of purchasing power, it is clear that MV not only performs poorly in regional comparisons, but also in the Germany-wide ranking. Duisburg, Bremerhaven and Gelsenkirchen have even lower purchasing power values than MV and are below 23,000 euros, but the comparison remains depressing. While Bavaria tops the list with a per capita income of 30,094 euros and Hamburg with 30,002 euros, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is still at the bottom of the field. This can also be derived from Acxiom's purchasing power index, which relates the per capita income of a region to the German average, as [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/MV-bei-Pro Kopf-Kaufkraft-bundesweit-Schlusslicht,kaufkraft110.html) reports.
- Duisburg: 22.843 Euro
- Bremerhaven: 22.110 Euro
- Gelsenkirchen: 21.965 Euro
- Schwerin: 25.271 Euro
- Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald: 22.941 Euro
- Bundesdurchschnitt: 27.925 Euro
- Bayern: 30.094 Euro
- Hamburg: 30.002 Euro
The situation in MV is further complicated by geopolitical uncertainties and economic challenges. While the financial situation of many Germans will have recovered in 2023, consumer spending in MV remains cautious. This makes it clear that despite positive income developments due to wage and transfer increases as well as lower energy prices, people in the region often have the feeling that there is still too much month left at the end of the money.
It is particularly important here that political decision-makers take appropriate measures to increase the quality of life in MV. It is often overlooked that purchasing power is not just a question of income, but also has a significant influence on the population's sense of security and future prospects. It is all the more important to take action here and get the country on the upward trend in the country.
