Unicef run in Schwerin: 16,000 euros for climate protection in Zambia!

There was a lot of hustle and bustle at the Pfaffenteich in Schwerin today as around 240 runners set off for this year's UNICEF run. The event raised more than 16,000 euros for an important cause – the climate protection project “Trees for Zambia”. The football boots were tightly laced and the route of around 1.7 kilometers was completed with a lot of good humor and positive energy. According to a spokeswoman for the event, the mood was consistently positive, even if the number of participants fell slightly compared to the previous year.

The idea behind the run is simple and yet effective: Each participant looks for sponsors who donate money for every lap they run. This meant that the cost of participation remained free, and yet great sums of money were raised. Thanks to the commitment of numerous participants and supporters, UNICEF can now advance important projects to combat the climate crisis in Zambia. This region is suffering from the massive impacts of climate change, such as droughts, storms and floods, which are making the living conditions of the people living there significantly more difficult.

UNICEF and climate protection

UNICEF is committed to improving the lives of children in Zambia, where climate change is threatening water supplies and crops. Through the “Trees for Zambia” project, the organization supports the development of new water sources and at the same time promotes the engagement of children and young people in the fight against climate change. The healthy development of children is closely linked to the preservation of a healthy planet, as evidenced by reports of natural disasters in other parts of the world - such as reports of hurricanes and other extreme weather events causing chaos and destruction in Nicaragua and elsewhere.

Running for a better future – that was the motto of this event, which also offered a colorful supporting program for the whole family. From painting and play streets to music and dancing to a delicious cake bazaar, there was something for everyone. A day that not only benefits your health, but also the environment!

Overall, the results of the run can be presented in a solid balance sheet. Over 16,000 euros in donations, positive atmosphere among the participants and commitment to a good cause - what could be nicer? The next opportunity to do something for climate action is sure to come, and organizers are committed to making the race even bigger and better next year.
