Holiday hustle and bustle: Mega traffic jams on the A10 threaten travel dreams!
The start of the holidays causes a real traffic gridlock on the roads in Bavaria and Austria. As merkur.de reports, travel traffic has largely normalized on June 8, 2025, but the Tauernautobahn (A10) is still the focus of massive traffic disruptions. The reason is not only the holidaymakers who are on their way to the most wonderful time of the year, but also the overdue renovation project, which is causing significant delays.
In particular, the block clearance in the direction of Pongau led to a test of patience. Even in the early hours of the morning, the waiting time was up to 1.5 hours in some places. The traffic chaos reached its peak on Whitsunday with a traffic jam of 25 kilometers in a row. Many travelers had to spend more than three hours on the motorway, while others saw a return journey from Munich to Venice, which normally takes just 6 hours and 20 minutes, extended to up to 10 hours by traffic jams.
The construction site as a brake block
A central factor contributing to the chaos on the A10 is the tunnel construction site near Golling, which will ensure single-lane traffic until the end of June 2025. This construction site includes the simultaneous renovation of five tunnels: the Ofenauer and Hiefler tunnels as well as the Werden tunnel chain (Brentenberg, Zetzenberg, Helbersberg) and extends over a 14 kilometer long section. It is estimated that drivers will have to expect additional waiting times of up to several hours on the weekends, and Asfinag reports that the wave of return trips will have concrete effects from Monday.
All departure closures for national through traffic until June 26th affect important junctions. Local travelers can pass through, but must prove that their destination is nearby. The flow of traffic is further impaired by truck drivers swerving onto country roads, which further exacerbates the situation.
Focus on traffic volume
A current publication by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, which reports on mobility in Germany, also shows that such traffic jams are not just a local phenomenon. The increasing traffic volumes over the last few years make it clear that the infrastructure often does not meet the requirements. This is particularly true during peak periods such as the holiday months when there are numerous travelers on the move.
In addition, alternative routes such as the Felbertauern-Bundesstraße (B108) and the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) are also occupied by construction sites, which can lead to further delays. It is therefore advisable to check the traffic situation carefully before starting your journey and, if necessary, plan detours.
Overall, it can be said that the holiday season is not only a challenge for holidaymakers, but also for the infrastructure, which is overwhelmed by the sometimes significantly increased traffic volume. Drivers should be patient and, if necessary, take alternative routes to avoid traffic jams and delays.
