Warnemünder Week: A sailing festival full of highlights and Olympic dreams!

The 87th Warnemünde Week, which ended on Sunday, July 14, 2025, brought not only exciting competitions, but also an impressive variety of international participants to Warnemünde. A total of 580 boats and around 800 athletes from 38 nations came together to fight for victory. NDR reports on additional competitions such as the Ilca European Cup and the European OK Dinghy Championship, which made the event even more exciting.

Sports director Peter Ramcke looked back with satisfaction on the mixed but eventful days in which the stormy winds posed a challenge for the sailors. “That’s part of sailing,” he explained optimistically. Mona Küppers, President of the German Sailing Association (DSV), praised the newly created infrastructure in Warnemünde and emphasized that Germany offers good options for Olympic sailing competitions, both here and in Kiel.

Top-class competitions and international flair

The newly designed competitions were particularly popular. Among other things, over 100 entries were received for the European OK dinghy championship, and around 300 participants took part in the ILCA European Cup, where many talented people tried to achieve a good placement. The three-time world champion André Budzien from the Schwerin Yacht Club was considered the favorite and described the field of participants as really strong, with hardly any top sailors from the international scene missing. DSV highlights the Olympic ambitions of many athletes, including athletes from the German Sailing Team.

A special highlight was the annual long-distance regatta Around Bornholm, in which 46 yachts took part. The course led around the Danish island and presented the participants with an exciting challenge.

A successful supporting program

But there wasn't just something going on on the water. Matthias Fromm, tourism director for Rostock and Warnemünde, presented a successful land program. The new highlights included the Glashäger beach concerts, which attracted a total of 5,000 visitors. This shows that Warnemünde Week is more than just a sailing event, it also becomes a cultural meeting.

The next opportunity for such events is coming soon - the 88th Warnemünder Week will be celebrated from July 4th to 12th, 2026, which will also mark the 100th anniversary of the event. “It’s nice to see how this event has grown,” said Ramcke.

The event traditionally ended with a dragon boat race and a thank you ceremony dedicated to three long-time organizers. However, there was also less positive news this weekend, including a burning semi-trailer and a nationwide crisis prevention day of action in Rostock.

With a view to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, German sailors can prepare for exciting competitions that can be found on the pages of German Sailing Team can be read. The enthusiasm for sailing is clearly noticeable in Warnemünde, and the city has once again demonstrated its strengths this week.
