Scandal surrounding a Wismar doctor: treated without authorization and causing damage!

In Wismar, an incident in aesthetic medicine is causing a stir. Helga Siemund from northwest Mecklenburg was looking for a new treatment to smooth out her frown lines and decided to have hyaluronic acid injected by a specialist in Wismar. Two Botox treatments had been carried out in Rostock, but the hope for a more effective method was disappointed. In March and April 2023, Helga was treated a total of two times and paid 870 euros in cash - without a receipt, which should have raised a red flag like that [Ostsee-Zeitung].

However, after the treatments, Helga's condition worsened dramatically. Instead of the desired improvement, deeper wrinkles, redness and bumps appeared on the forehead. Her new team of doctors soon expressed concerns: the doctor treating her apparently did not have a German license to practice medicine, and her website was also disappointing due to the lack of an imprint, which violates legal requirements. Katarina Sass from the MV Medical Association made it clear that all the information required by practitioners must be legal.

Admission and qualifications

Another sticking point was that the doctor's certificates from her home country were not properly signed and stamped. This detail sensitized Helga's new doctors, who expressed strong concerns about her qualifications. In Germany, a state-recognized license to practice medicine is required to practice the profession of doctor. Since the licensing authority did not know the doctor, it seems to be assumed that she is not licensed to practice medicine in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The article in the Ostsee-Zeitung also reports that Helga Siemund finally hired a lawyer and actually received her 870 euros back. Especially since the Wismar doctor has not yet taken a position on the allegations, while her husband threatened to sue for defamation.

The dangers of hyaluronic treatments

In general, hyaluronic treatments are popular because they are relatively minimally invasive. According to the DGA there are different preparations that vary depending on skin type, region and desired result. However, if used improperly, undesirable side effects such as those described by Helga can occur. In addition, risks such as allergies must always be taken into account. It is therefore crucial that only qualified specialists carry out such injections.

The current case law that is addressed in Deutschlandfunk is all the more interesting. There it becomes clear that doctors are not allowed to advertise certain beauty treatments, including hyaluronic acid injections, with before and after pictures. This regulation is intended to prevent patients from being tempted to undergo procedures that are not medically necessary and thus focus on the quality of the treatment.

Helga Siemund's story raises the question of how safe patients actually are in the world of aesthetic medicine. In addition to the importance of professional qualifications, it is more important than ever that patients are well informed and pay close attention to the certificates and the trustworthiness of the treating doctors.
