Federal government is funding 421 million euros for the new Peene Bridge in Wolgast!

The planning of an important infrastructure project is taking concrete shape in northern Germany: the construction of a new bridge over the Peenestrom in Wolgast has officially started. The federal government has provided a generous 421 million euros to optimize traffic conditions on the B111 and the connection to the island of Usedom. This measure plays a key role in the bypass, which has a total volume of around 500 million euros, and is intended to help reduce congestion both on the mainland and on the popular holiday island. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) released the funds at the beginning of November, putting the project on the fast track.

Minister of Economics and Transport Dr. Wolfgang Blank described this step as an important milestone for the region's transport infrastructure. He emphasized that the construction of the new bridge will not only strengthen the economy and tourism on Usedom, but also increase the quality of life of residents by relieving congested roads. The bridge will be designed as a suspension bridge and, with a height of 42 meters, will ensure that ships can pass at any time as there is no opening mechanism.

Details about the project

The bridge will reach a remarkable height of 70 meters at the pylons and provide a two-lane carriageway with a width of eight meters. The total length of the new connection will be 1.4 kilometers. In order to coordinate the implementation, the construction schedule is drawn up in close cooperation with the commissioned bidding consortium, which also includes the Swiss Implenia Civil Engineering GmbH. The entire project was originally budgeted at 125 million euros, but the estimated costs have since increased significantly.

Completion of the entire Wolgast bypass is scheduled for the end of 2028. While the district administrator of Vorpommern-Greifswald, who is supposed to drive forward the construction, has little influence on the implementation of the project, the new bridge remains a central element of regional planning and development.

Part of the major infrastructure initiative

The bridge over the Peenestrom is more than just a local project; it is part of a comprehensive strategy by the federal government, which will invest 166 billion euros in infrastructure in the coming years. This initiative focuses on renovating dilapidated railway lines and motorway bridges, with 107 billion euros earmarked for rail alone. These efforts are intended to comprehensively modernize and improve the transport infrastructure in Germany by 2029.
