Young people from Wolgast: prison sentences after burglaries and crimes!

A recent ruling is causing a stir in Wolgast. Two young men, 17 and 20 years old, have become the focus of the justice system through repeated offenses, including theft and grievous bodily harm. For breaking into a special school in February 2024, they have now been sentenced to prison without parole. The judge expressed the hope that the structure and therapy offers in prison could help the convicts to improve. Both should take part in therapy, school education and anti-aggression training in Neustrelitz in order to sustainably change their behavior, reports Baltic Sea newspaper.

The increasing juvenile crime has repeatedly sparked discussions in recent years. Statistics show that the majority of juvenile offenders are male, and many of them stop criminal behavior as they grow up. According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education Up to 70% of students stated that they had committed a crime in the past year. In a survey, 22.9% of students and 12.5% of female students admitted to having committed at least one crime. However, it is important to emphasize that serious forms of juvenile crime are rare.

New Norma supermarket in Wolgast-Nord

Despite the worrying situation in youth crime, there is also positive news from Wolgast: the planned construction of a new Norma supermarket on Hufelandstrasse is becoming concrete. The market, whose development plan is almost completed, is scheduled to open in 2026. The older residents in Wolgast-Nord, who no longer have a food market since the Edeka market was closed, can be particularly pleased about this development.

Transport projects and regional developments

In parallel to these developments, transport projects in the region are also being discussed. A new bypass road near Stettin costing the equivalent of a good two billion euros is intended to enclose the largest city in Western Pomerania with a ring road and include an impressive tunnel under the Oder. At five kilometers, this tunnel will be even longer than the Swine Tunnel, which opened in 2023, and is expected to be opened to traffic in 2033. In addition, there is an urgent need to expand the connection between Neue Bahnhofstrasse and the Südhafen industrial area in Wolgast in order to enable large trucks to cross the tracks more easily.

The city is hoping for support from the state government to push ahead with this expansion as soon as possible and to keep heavy goods traffic away from the city center.
