Red alert: Black ice danger hits Lower Saxony – accidents follow!

Winter keeps the whole of Lower Saxony in suspense. Today, December 27, 2025, the entire region is being warned by the German Weather Service (DWD) about “marked slippery conditions”. This danger message is primarily caused by freezing rain, residual moisture and frost, which turn the streets into dangerous slides. Pictures of crashed cars and bursting tires are already making the rounds, and many drivers have to be extra careful these days. During the night there were numerous accidents that happened because of the freezing rain and thick fog. The south was hit particularly hard, where the police in Neubrandenburg counted 15 operations by early morning, as Tagesschau reports.

In Lower Saxony the situation is no less dramatic. The Hanover and Oldenburg police departments reported dozens of ice icing accidents here, many of which resulted in injuries. Seven vehicles had to be braked in a rear-end collision on the A1 motorway, while in Lastrup a 22-year-old and her baby were slightly injured; fortunately the child remained uninjured. Unfortunately, such reports are not the exception: drivers are required to exercise increased caution.

Cooling down at night

As the district newspaper shows, the situation doesn't just worsen during the day. The night also brings cold: On the coast, temperatures drop to around 3 degrees, while in the rest of Lower Saxony it can even cool down to -6 degrees. It remains largely free of precipitation, but this does not eliminate the slipperiness. On Sunday night there is a risk of frost and the risk of slipping again. A strong high-pressure influence from Iceland ensures mild but wet air, which comes into conflict with the minus temperatures and hardens the roads, so that the risk of black ice remains, as Weather Hazards also describes.

Where freezing rain had already fallen during the night, visibility in the foggy regions, especially in the south, remains below 150 meters. Drivers in these areas need to keep their eyes open! As early as Saturday afternoon, the DWD warned of a temporary calming of the weather, but the slippery conditions would probably remain for a long time. The roads will remain unpredictable.

Fluctuating weather in the forecast

This weekend, a milder wind from the northwest will clear away the dreary clouds of fog, but the ground remains dangerous. The moist and cold mix makes the days leading up to New Year's Eve exciting. A look at the next few days shows that we could be faced with constantly changing weather conditions with snow, sleet or at least sleet as early as the turn of the year. So it remains exciting! The DWD will certainly keep us up to date with updated warnings in order to optimally inform the region about the weather and possible risks. Even though the southern part of Lower Saxony still appears friendly at the moment, drivers should exercise caution and not be fooled by the good-looking roads.
