Heroic deed by the fire department: Queeny the cat rescued from a tree after five days!
What a Drama! Last Saturday, the volunteer fire department was called to an unusual animal rescue in a small garden in the northern district of Leybuchtpolder. The one-year-old cat Queeny has been stuck in a tree at a height of 16 meters since Tuesday, October 25, 2025. After five days of endurance, it was high time for the life-saving action.
The owners had already missed their beloved Queeny on Tuesday and tried everything to lure her back. However, calling and offering food only offered limited success. Queeny, who had bravely perched herself in a fork in a branch, seemed unwilling to descend the dizzying climb again. On Friday, when the situation became worrying and the first attempts to contact the fire department failed, an important decision was made. Because of the strong gusts of wind that exceeded the operational limits of the turntable ladder, the cat rescuers' return was postponed until the next night.
Rescue at heights
Luckily for the difficult rescue: On Saturday, when Queeny was still meowing and calling for help, the weather calmed down. The fire department was ready to help again. The emergency services arrived with a turntable ladder and fire engine, but first had to cut the way to Queeny because branches were blocking the rescue. This first step of the rescue operation took around an hour.
Finally, two firefighters managed to reach Queeny in the turntable ladder basket. Their initial attempts to escape were hasty, but the rescuers showed good luck and were finally able to catch them. Back in the warm house, Queeny appeared exhausted but uninjured. To cool down after the adventure, she greedily ate her food. Her concerned owners immediately placed the adventurer under temporary house arrest.
Animal rescue – an important task of the fire department
This operation is just one of many examples of how the fire department not only supports people, but also animals in emergency situations. Animal rescue is a central part of their tasks, as described on NDR. However, it is important to note that not every animal in distress requires immediate fire department intervention. It is important to use common sense and anticipate whether help is needed.
In recent years, the fire department in the region has repeatedly carried out animal rescues, be it horses that got into ditches or other animals in danger. This shows that the volunteer fire department is well prepared for such situations. New blood is urgently needed for the helping hands that are always available so that we can continue to help animals and people in the future.
A big thank you to the brave firefighters who rescued Queeny from her predicament, and a smiling “goodbye” to the cat, who now has to keep her feet still.
