New PlusBus in the Aurich district: Faster connections for everyone!
A breath of fresh air is blowing through the Aurich district, as six new “PlusBus” lines have been providing a noticeable improvement in local public transport since May 2023. The new connections offer citizens faster access to important destinations in the region, such as Wittmund, Jever, Krummhörn and Ihlow. School district manager Jens Kleen is pleased with the positive reception of the lines, even if the start was not without some teething problems. The planning and coordination was anything but a walk in the park due to existing contracts and the necessary coordination with neighboring municipalities. NWZonline reports that the weekly evaluation of complaints also serves to optimize processes.
The new timetables provide hourly departures from morning to evening, including weekends and public holidays. Here are the most important lines at a glance:
- Linie 480: Aurich – Wittmund – Jever
- Linie 421: Emden – Pewsum – Greetsiel
- Linie 422: Emden – Loquard – Wybelsum – Pewsum – Eilsum
- Linie 450: Aurich – Riepe – Emden
- Linie 451: Aurich – Ihlow – Simonswolde
- Linie 410: Aurich – Georgsheil – Emden
Improving connectivity
The new lines not only improve regional mobility, but also ensure better connections to rail transport, which is particularly beneficial for commuters. The first evaluation of the Aurich – Jever line already shows that between 25 and 30 people use the connection regularly. Specific timetables have been created for the schools in the district that are tailored to their needs. However, it is reported that many students are not yet informed about these offers. The district plans to increase marketing here in order to improve the information situation.
In addition, the Aurich district is striving to further optimize bus connections. A tender for the Großheide-Hage “line bundle” is planned for 2026, and the connections between Aurich and Dornum are also to be improved. The district is thus setting the course for sustainable mobility in the region.
A look beyond the borders
The concept of “PlusBus” lines is on the rise not only in the Aurich district, but also in other federal states. From the nationally important bus lines in Baden-Württemberg, known as “Regiobus lines”, to similar models in Brandenburg and Lower Saxony, it is clear how important a well-coordinated connection to local public transport is. In Lower Saxony, for example, a study was carried out in 2015 on the introduction of a nationwide bus route network, and since 2017 these routes have been supported by the Lower Saxony State Local Transport Company. This is part of a larger context in which the adaptation and improvement of local transport across Germany is being promoted.
The Aurich district has taken an important step in this direction with the new “PlusBus” lines. This creates the conditions not only to offer citizens comfortable and reliable mobility, but also to increase the attractiveness of local public transport. Further information about the “PlusBus” lines and their design is available on the district’s official website [available.
The changes in local public transport are an example of how thoughtful planning and cooperation between different institutions can lead to a real improvement in the quality of life in the region. And that's what counts in the end.
