Attack on AfD members in Göttingen: State security investigates!

On Saturday evening, October 4, 2025, Göttingen city center became the scene of a worrying attack that caused a stir in the region. Two members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) were slightly injured while walking in a larger group after an internal party meeting. The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. on Obere-Masch-Straße, right next to the “OM10” building, where people from the area around the “Nullfive” football fan room were at the same time. According to NDR, the Göttingen police took over the investigation based on the assumption that the crime was politically motivated.

The two AfD members, 28 and 35 years old, were part of a group of around 15 people, including a member of the Bundestag, who went for a walk together after visiting a restaurant. The aim of the walk was to pass the “OM10” building, which ultimately led to the altercation. An AfD member was recognized by a person in the building, which led to five people storming out and directly attacking the two men, as HNA reports.

Minor injuries and manhunt

The attack resulted in minor injuries to the two men, including redness and bruising. Interestingly, the AfD claimed that one of the men was hit on the forehead with a glass bottle - a detail that was not known to the police. The injured refused medical treatment, which does not make the situation seem any less serious. As part of the search, the officers were able to identify five suspects: two women aged 26 and 35 and three men aged 23, 32 and 49. Although they were identified as possible perpetrators, they were ultimately released.

The police have started an investigation into suspicion of grievous bodily harm and are still looking for witnesses. Due to the politically sensitive nature of the issue, such incidents are not new. According to statistics from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office, there has been an increase in politically motivated violence in Germany for years. The figures between 2001 and 2024 show worrying trends in this direction, which are also increasing the social debate on the subject of radicalization and extremism.

What's next?

The left-wing youth, whose stickers were found at the crime scene, has denied being involved in this dispute as the originator. The flickering light of the political debate will continue to burn, and the coming days may reveal further details. The Göttingen police are calling for possible witnesses to be contacted. Anyone with information can do so by calling 0551/491-2115.

The incidents in Göttingen are a serious signal that the way society treats one another needs to be discussed more intensively. The pressure is increasing on the security authorities to act quickly and consistently in the event of political attacks in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
