Classic bakery lives on: Kretzschmar takes over Mechau branches!

The first bakery that is often mentioned in Braunschweig is the Mechau bakery. But in the summer of 2023 it had to close its doors. Karl Mechau, who ran the traditional bakery for no less than 130 years, retired at the age of 77. But there is good reason for hope: The Kretzschmar bakery has taken over two of the three branches in Mechau, thereby saving a significant part of Braunschweig's baking culture. This reports News38.

The Kretzschmar bakery is now run by Stefan Kretzschmar in the sixth generation. The reopening of the branch on Dürerstrasse was a pleasing step that took place on July 5, 2023. Before reopening, the branch received a facelift with visual renovations, fresh lighting and additional seating so that you can really enjoy yourself there.

Traditions and new offers

Connoisseurs will be pleased to know that some of the former Mechau Bakery's popular products, such as root bread and curry confections, are still available. But the diversity of Kretzschmar itself is also impressive: the focus is particularly on portafilter coffee and homemade ice cream flavors, including refreshing limoncello ice cream and vegan fruit ice cream. These innovations have apparently gained a good foothold among customers. Stefan Kretzschmar reports a positive start and satisfied visitors.

The hustle and bustle will be further enhanced by the planned expansion of the bakery. A second branch on Schunterstrasse is scheduled to follow after the summer holidays in 2023, and the anticipation is great.

Another topic of sustainability

Society is concerned with a completely different but equally important topic: dealing with electronic waste. E-waste includes discarded electronic devices such as computers, smartphones and televisions, which not only pose an environmental hazard but also hold the potential for valuable materials. The e-waste management market will reach $137 billion by 2029, according to the report Climatesort.

The challenges are great - many countries lack adequate recycling facilities, which means that electronic waste ends up in landfills or is processed in a less environmentally friendly way. It is estimated that an estimated $62 billion of recyclable resources were lost in 2022 due to poor e-waste management. But there are also bright spots: recycling avoids massive emissions and helps conserve resources.

Innovations and potential solutions

However, technological advances could bring help. Further developments in automation and digital solutions are used to increase efficiency and traceability in e-waste management. Innovative companies are working on solutions such as free collections at shopping centers to raise awareness and increase recycling rates.

In the mobility industry, the issue of energy consumption is also not left out of the spotlight. The Genesis website offers comprehensive information about the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new cars. The official values in particular are based on the globally harmonized test procedure (WLTP), which lays the foundation for transparent and responsible driving and is available at many sales points and online.

A healthy awareness of local traditions and responsibility for our environment – these topics have recently shaped the discussion in Braunschweig and beyond. Let's be excited to see how the bakery landscape and the way we deal with electronic waste will develop.
