New Hölty-Gymnasium in Hambühren: An educational offensive started!

On June 26th, 2025, a new chapter in education was opened in Hambühren: The Hölty-Gymnasium celebrated its official opening. The project, which consumed a total of 52 million euros from the district budget, is not only a new building, but also a symbol of a new educational approach. Mayor Carsten Kranz took the opportunity to observe the construction progress from the town hall and to speak at the inauguration ceremony.

This celebration was festive and attracted numerous guests, including district council members, school principals and members of the local council. The achievements of Monika Nerreter, the former head of the high school, were particularly highlighted in the speeches. The event was accompanied musically by the Hölty big band, whose sounds created a cheerful atmosphere.

The modern campus

The new Hölty-Gymnasium is located on a spacious 3.2 hectare property in Hambühren and is brimming with modern amenities. 900 students in grades 8 to 13 study here on a total of 10,000 square meters. The existing building remains available for the younger grades 5 to 7. The new building was built according to the latest educational standards and offers a cafeteria with 200 seats, a multifunctional sports hall and sufficient bicycle parking spaces. Headmaster Stefan Lahme pointed out that the main building was designed as a magnificent building with open learning landscapes, in which the facade proudly displays the school's heraldic animal, a peacock.

During the opening speech, Kranz quoted the famous Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.” This message not only represents the philosophy of the new educational institution, but also the ambitions that are being pursued here.

A look at the educational offerings

The Hölty-Gymnasium is more than just a place of learning; it is a space for comprehensive personal development. While the last Abitur exam in the old building in Celle is still planned for 2028, the new students from the 5th grade onwards will be welcomed with a wide range of subjects and many leisure activities. This gives students the opportunity to choose between different foreign languages, ranging from English in the 5th grade to optional third languages such as Russian from grade 8 onwards.

In addition to the regular subjects, there are numerous working groups that enrich school life: from “Vokalini” to art workshops and robotics to topics such as “Queer & friends” and watching nature, the students’ diverse interests are covered. There is also structured afternoon care for years 5 and 6, which is offered from Monday to Thursday. This means there is no room for boredom and the students can discover and develop their individual talents.

Education as an investment in the future

However, the importance of such educational institutions goes beyond the direct benefit to students. Given the increasing demand for school places and the stable return prospects from investments in school properties, it is clear that educational institutions are not only socially relevant, but also financially rewarding for investors such as pension funds. The PwC study on investment in educational institutions highlights how important school buildings are as a sustainable and socially significant capital investment. Headmaster Stefan Lahme expressed optimism about the future-oriented opportunities that the new Hölty-Gymnasium can offer the students and the entire community.

In sum, the start of the Hölty-Gymnasium in Hambühren is not only a reason to celebrate, but also a step towards innovative and future-oriented education that opens up new perspectives for young people in the region.
