Storm warning for Celle: lightning, storm and heavy rain on Sunday!
The weather forecast for the Celle district is currently raising eyebrows. On Sunday evening, June 22nd, the German Weather Service sounded the alarm and issued a thunderstorm and storm warning. Strong gusts of around 70 km/h are to be expected, which means wind force 8. The amount of precipitation can also be considerable: up to 15 liters of rain per square meter per hour and even hail are forecast. This warning is in effect from 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The dangers should not be underestimated. The DWD warns of lightning strikes, which can be life-threatening. In addition, flying, light objects are a constant danger. Streets and underpasses could quickly be flooded, and aquaplaning could cause major traffic problems. During a thunderstorm, it is advisable to seek shelter inside a building or vehicle and avoid places such as hills, lakes and trees. Anyone who is outside should move away immediately, as water conducts lightning even at great distances. The DWD also strongly recommends closing windows and doors and securing loose objects outside.
The warning situation is serious and the risk of electric shock while showering theoretically remains. Although this is practically unlikely, especially with functioning lightning protection systems, caution is advised. Older buildings with metal fittings in particular can be dangerous during thunderstorms. The danger levels for thunderstorms in Lower Saxony are clearly defined and range from level 2 (danger to life from lightning strikes and possible damage to trees and roofs) to level 4, which describes extremely dangerous situations.
Storm maps and more information
To keep an eye on the weather situation, citizens can use NDR's helpful storm maps. These show the current warnings for the individual districts and inform you whether there are multiple warnings for gusts of wind and heavy rain at the same time. How ndr.de reported, the warnings are classified according to various weather phenomena, including thunderstorms, heavy rain and even slippery conditions and frost.
Overall, there are four different danger levels for weather warnings, with level 1 representing a simple warning and level 4 warning of extreme weather events.
Special dangers for agriculture
In addition to the current storm, farms are also dealing with other challenges. The Agricultural Meteorology Department provides information about heat stress, which is a major issue, particularly for poultry. An important key figure for the current situation is the total heat content of the air, which is known as enthalpy. Midsummer temperatures combined with high enthalpy levels can endanger animals, so appropriate care and ventilation in the stables is crucial. How weatherhazards.de explains, updated information on these stressors will be provided daily from May to September.
It remains to be hoped that the severe thunderstorm situation will be mild and that everyone will take the necessary precautionary measures in a timely manner. Pay attention to the current weather warnings and stay safe!
