New mega-ship berth in Emden: 70 million euros for the future!
Construction of a new mega-ship berth has begun in Emden, which sets the course for the future-proof development of the port. With a symbolic ramming blow, Prime Minister Olaf Lies and Environment Minister Christian Meyer gave the starting signal for this important infrastructure project. The costs amount to an impressive 70 million euros, which are financed from the budget of the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection Niedersachsen.de reported.
The planned mega-ship berth will be an impressive 337 meters long and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. The aim of the project is to enable the handling of car transporters, which often have a large draft. This is particularly important since the port of Emden is considered No. 2 in Germany and No. 3 in Europe for automobile handling. A technical test also showed that the water level in the outer harbor can drop by up to 40 centimeters if the Ems barrage is closed. In the past, this led to difficulties when loading vehicles n-tv shows.
Ecological transformation and economic security
As part of the project, “tide control” of the Ems will also be implemented for ecological improvement. This measure is intended to help solve the silt problem in the Ems and at the same time secure economic development in the region. The city of Emden has clearly communicated that it will only agree if the disadvantages caused by tidal control are offset by the new infrastructure measures.
The new infrastructure should make it possible to take on the load of two large car transporters at the same time, even during tidal control. This is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency in the port. The work includes the construction of new quays, dredging work, the dismantling of old facilities and the construction of new terminal areas of around 23,200 square meters. The Lower Saxony port company NPorts is responsible for the planning and construction of the berth, while a bidding consortium made up of companies from Emden and Hamburg will carry out the actual construction.
Long-term prospects and significance for the region
The measure is in the context of the “Ems 2050 Master Plan”, which is intended to promote the long-term security of the Emden port location as a competitive logistics and industrial location. How Ems master plan notes, this investment is a crucial step in maintaining the port's functionality and improving its future prospects.
Overall, the construction of the mega-ship berth promises not only improved connections for car transport, but also a strengthening of Emden's economic position in the national and European context. It remains to be seen how developments will develop before completion in 2027, but the signs look promising.
