When coaching friends duel: Werder against Kickers Emden!
A very special meeting is coming up on Saturday: SV Werder Bremen and Kickers Emden will meet in a test match at the Ostfriesland Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Behind this encounter are not only sporting ambitions, but also an old friendship between the two coaches, Horst Steffen and Stefan Emmerling. Both used to play together for MSV Duisburg and still have memories of their time in football.
It becomes particularly nostalgic when you consider that the last game the two played together as players took place on May 13, 2000. At that time, Werder Bremen won 4-0 against Duisburg. Tragically, Steffen and Emmerling missed the 1998 DFB Cup final due to injury. Nevertheless, Emmerling values Steffen's career very much and sees him as an example that in football it is never too late to return to the Bundesliga.
Busy ticket sales
There is great anticipation for the test match, which is also reflected in ticket sales. Within 24 hours of the start of sales, 3,200 tickets had already found a buyer, and a total of almost 6,500 tickets have now been sold. With a stadium capacity of 7,200 seats, an almost sold-out stadium is expected, as there are still remaining tickets available in the guest block and there is no separation of fans.
Kickers Emden, under the management of Emmerling, is currently playing in the Regionalliga Nord and has clear goals in mind. As they prepare for the friendly, the upcoming regional league opening game against SV Meppen on July 25th is also an important focus. The coach will give his team everything to achieve promotion to the 3rd league.
Personnel situation at Werder Bremen
At Werder Bremen, however, the personnel situation doesn't look quite as rosy. Coach Horst Steffen has to do without some key players. Jens Stage, Marvin Ducksch and Mitchell Weiser are not in the squad due to injuries. Nevertheless, the team is optimistic about the start of the new season after they resumed training on July 7th and won their first friendly against FC Verden 6-0.
Given the history, previous successes and current developments in football, the spectators are excited about the test match. It will not only be an exciting encounter on the pitch, but also a reunion of old football friends that has a lot to offer fans from both sides.
As the two coaches emphasize, football can always open up new avenues. And who knows, maybe this friendly will be the first step towards a successful season for both teams. The anticipation for what will happen on Saturday is huge and the fans can look forward to an exciting match.
Information about the coaches and the game is provided in the reports from Dike room and NWZ Online again.
