Strawberry season in Lower Saxony: The top 10 pick-your-own fields discovered!
Summertime is strawberry time in Germany, and that attracts many people to the fields. The pick-your-own trend not only delights families, but also gourmets who want to enjoy fresh strawberries straight from the vine. These delicious fruits have found their place in numerous German households. On average, every German consumes around 3.7 kilos of strawberries every year. This, together with the possibility of harvesting the fruit yourself, ensures a rhino hit in the market.
As now news38.de reports, Fit Reisen examined 111 self-picking fields around the 30 largest cities in Germany and created an interesting ranking. Three fields have found a remarkable place, particularly in the state of Lower Saxony. The most popular is the Obsthof Halbhuber in Evessen, which comes in sixth place overall according to Google reviews. With 153 reviews and an average of 4.8 stars, this farm is highly praised by visitors.
Most popular strawberry fields in Lower Saxony
The other Lower Saxony fields in the ranking are also worth mentioning. The Lauenroth farm in Ilsede takes eleventh place, while the Salzdahlum domain and the Riess fruit farm can be found in 28th and 42nd place. The success of these businesses is not only due to the fresh and aromatic strawberries, but also to the transparency that self-picking offers. It's a well-rounded experience that gives you access to fresh strawberries and at the same time gives you a good feeling of knowing exactly where the treats come from.
The decline in strawberry cultivation
But strawberry cultivation in Germany also faces challenges. ble.de shows that the cultivated area has steadily declined in recent years. In 2023, strawberries were cultivated on around 14,010 hectares, a decrease of almost a quarter compared to 2015. There are many reasons for this, including the reduction in outdoor cultivation and the increase in protected cultivation areas, where yields per hectare are almost twice as high.
Despite these challenges, Lower Saxony remains one of the most important strawberry growing regions in Germany. Together with North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg, around 60 percent of the total cultivated area falls on these three federal states. But the passion and commitment of local businesses make mass-produced strawberries stand out and make them a special treat for everyone.
In the end all we can say is: summer is the best time to visit the strawberry fields! Whether for a sweet temptation or a shared experience with friends and family – freshly picked strawberries are always a hit.
