Construction site in Gifhorn causes excitement: dispute over strange sign!

In Gifhorn, a newly established construction site is causing discussions and mocking comments on social networks. Since July 8, 2025, the Eyßelheideweg in the direction of Winkel has been converted into a one-way street. The measure is part of an extensive road construction project that extends over a section between Am Tappenberg and Hermann-Löns-Weg. The barrier-free expansion of the bus platforms at stops such as Waldesruh and Vogelbeerweg is also being pushed forward, which has already been implemented since May 22nd. The asphalt pavement renewals began on July 3, 2025 with a planned construction period of around eight weeks in order to further improve the infrastructure.

Of course, the construction site also entails restrictions for residents, as the Eyßelheideweg will be completely closed between the B4 and Hermann-Löns-Weg. A one-way street regulation in the direction of Winkel will be introduced for local traffic. Disruptions and longer waiting times are to be expected in the coming weeks, especially during the milling work in calendar week 28. Particular attention will be paid to the asphalt paving, which is planned between July 28 and August 1, 2025. During these days, access to the properties will remain closed between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Discussion about misleading sign

Another exciting feature is a new additional sign that was installed during construction. The wording “regular services are free” and “residents are free to access the properties” has caused some confusion and has been heavily criticized on social media. A Gifhorner shared a photo of the sign in a Facebook group and drew attention to the unfortunate spelling. The city of Gifhorn has responded to the situation and explained that the sign was commissioned by a traffic safety company. Although the wording is not standardized in the road traffic regulations, it was chosen to avoid a complete closure. A new sign has already been ordered, but will remain in use until the new copy is delivered.

The city administration emphasizes that despite the difficulties for residents, access for rescue workers and local suppliers will be guaranteed at all times. Residents were also informed about possible changes to the construction process, while remaining work will still be necessary after the summer holidays. The school bus route will also pass through the construction site area as soon as traffic is reopened.

Extensive construction work in Gifhorn

In-depth work is necessary for the entire measure. The construction volume includes, among other things, 2.1 kilometers of the affected road as well as the removal and installation of 100 manhole covers and 70 slide caps. The replacement of over 13,000 square meters of asphalt pavement units is also on the agenda. This extensive work is not only limited to the road itself, but also takes into account marking work for bicycle lanes and pictograms, planned for September 2025.

Despite the extensive construction work, the city of Gifhorn emphasizes the importance of the measures for future traffic safety and accessibility. Residents and road users are asked to be patient and understanding during the construction phase.
