18.5 million euros for University Medicine Göttingen: This is how it goes!
In a significant step for the science landscape of Lower Saxony, the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) receives funding of 18.5 million euros. This financial support, which will be distributed over the next five years, comes from the state of Lower Saxony and the Volkswagen Foundation. The aim of the initiative is to promote future-oriented projects and to strengthen the competitiveness of the UMG, such as the Borkener Zeitung reported.
The project bears the name "UMG 2032 - Excellence Through Focus" and began on July 1, 2025. Here, there are several focuses, including internationalization and talent promotion. In addition to financial support, the state of Lower Saxony is currently promoting a total of 265 million euros, which are distributed to various universities in the state to improve the international visibility of universities.
important initiatives and goals
Under the snapid title "Potential Develop Strategic", the largest funding initiative in the history of Lower Saxony is implemented. As part of this initiative, the UMG pursues five ambitious goals that also aim to promote the so -called technology transfer so that scientific knowledge quickly reaches practical use. The initiatives include:
- Foundation of a graduate school on skilled skilled workers
- Establishment of a "Medical Career Center" to support doctoral doctors
- Strengthening research profile development through networking of topics: molecular cell biology, neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine and oncology
- recruitment of five early career researchers to the management of junior research groups
- Expansion of support structures in research management
The focus is particularly remarkable on the "metabolic plasticity", which will play a central role in research. Here, mechanisms that lead to incorrect regulations of cell functions and favor diseases are to be examined in more detail. The aim is to better understand these mechanisms and to work specifically on their repair. In this regard, a specialized position is also set up in research management that should support scientists in the application of international funding, as UMG
international exchange and cooperation
The funding should not only improve the internal structures of the UMG, but also strengthen cooperation with other research institutions both on the campus and beyond. The aim is to optimize the interfaces between the different research areas and to promote outstanding scientists on all career levels. The intention behind it is clear: The UMG wants to position itself as a linchpin of modern medical research, which is not least supported by the Volkswagen Foundation, as is reported on IDW Online
The UMG is optimistic that the new projects and initiatives not only increase their visibility at an international level, but also help to improve people's quality of life through innovative therapies and medication. A good knack for implementing these ambitious plans could make the University Medical Center Göttingen one of the leading facilities in medical research.
