18.5 million euros for Göttingen University Medical Center: This is how it continues!
In a significant step for Lower Saxony's scientific landscape, the Göttingen University Medical Center (UMG) will receive funding worth 18.5 million euros. This financial support, which will be distributed over the next five years, comes from the state of Lower Saxony and the Volkswagen Foundation. The aim of the initiative is to advance forward-looking projects and strengthen the competitiveness of UMG, such as Borken newspaper reported.
The project is called “UMG 2032 – Excellence through Focus” and began on July 1, 2025. The focus here is on several key areas, including internationalization and talent promotion. In addition to financial support, the state of Lower Saxony is currently funding a total of 265 million euros, which will be distributed among various universities in the state in order to improve the universities' international visibility.
Key initiatives and goals
The largest funding initiative in the history of Lower Saxony is being implemented under the snappy title “Strategically developing potential”. As part of this initiative, the UMG is pursuing five ambitious goals, which are also aimed at promoting so-called technology transfer so that scientific findings can be quickly put into practice. The initiatives include:
- Gründung einer Graduiertenschule zur Fachkräftegewinnung
- Einrichtung eines „Medical Career Center“ zur Unterstützung von promovierten Medizinern
- Stärkung der Forschungsprofilentwicklung durch Vernetzung der Themen: Molekulare Zellbiologie, Neurowissenschaften, Herz-Kreislauf-Medizin und Onkologie
- Rekrutierung von fünf Early Career Researchers zur Leitung von Junior Research Groups
- Erweiterung der Unterstützungsstrukturen im Forschungsmanagement
Particularly noteworthy is the focus on “metabolic plasticity”, which will play a central role in the research. The aim is to examine mechanisms that lead to dysregulation of cell functions and promote diseases. The aim is to better understand these mechanisms and work specifically on repairing them. In this regard, a specialized position in research management will also be set up to support scientists in applying for international funding UMG points out.
International exchange and cooperation
The funding is intended not only to improve the UMG's internal structures, but also to strengthen collaboration with other research institutions both on campus and beyond. The aim is to optimize the interfaces between the different research areas and to promote outstanding scientists at all career levels. The intention behind it is clear: The UMG wants to position itself as a linchpin of modern medical research, which is supported not least by the Volkswagen Foundation IDW Online is reported.
The UMG is optimistic that the new projects and initiatives will not only increase its visibility on an international level, but will also help improve people's quality of life through innovative therapies and medications. A good hand in implementing these ambitious plans could make the Göttingen University Medical Center one of the leading institutions in medical research.
