Blitzmarathon in Lower Saxony: Racing drivers pay high fines!

From August 10th to 15th, 2025, Lower Saxony will be dominated by speed controls. On the occasion of a Europe-wide coordinated ROADPOL campaign under the motto “Speed Control Week”, the police will be increasingly deployed to encourage speeders to comply with the speed limits. This initiative also includes neighboring federal states such as Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, which underlines the importance of this measure.

The Göttingen Police Department has already started the checks and checked 2,366 vehicles. Fortunately, the majority of the 782 speeding violations identified were minor. For example, a 22-year-old in the Holzminden district drove in town at 88 km/h instead of the permitted 50 km/h. Such violations are particularly relevant because they not only result in fines, but also endanger road traffic.

Results from the region

Road users in other regions of Lower Saxony are also being scrutinized. 303 speeding violations were detected in the Osnabrück urban area and the adjacent motorways. These led to 170 fines being imposed and five driving bans. A particularly striking case was a vehicle on the A33 that was traveling at 148 km/h - instead of the permitted 100 km/h. In Vechta there were also controls between Friday evening and Saturday morning, where two violations led to driving bans.

The overall balance is expected to be published in the middle of the week, which will be of interest to many road users. For the police, these checks are not only an opportunity to impose fines, but also a measure to increase general road safety.

Fines and driving bans in detail

The penalties for speeding are clearly regulated in the German catalog of fines and vary depending on the severity of the violation. In urban areas, exceeding the limit by 1 to 10 km/h can result in a fine of 30 euros, while exceeding the limit by more than 70 km/h can result in a fine of 700 euros. The situation is no different outside of town: anyone who drives too fast at 41 to 50 km/h has to pay 320 euros and risks a one-month driving ban. This also takes into account that 3 km/h is deducted for speeds below 100 km/h.

During this speed check week, the police use both stationary and mobile checkpoints to record the speed of vehicles in real time. From radar systems to light barriers and laser measuring devices - the technology is diverse and is constantly being further developed in order to increase road safety and consistently punish dangerous driving behavior.

Overall, this inspection week is not only a call for considerate driving, but also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of speed limits. After all, every kilometer that is driven too fast is a potential risk – for yourself and for other road users. The police and regulatory authorities are doing everything they can to make the streets safer and to bring speeders to their senses through preventative measures and strict controls.

With this in mind: drive carefully and stick to the rules - disagreements between speed and reason are not welcome on our roads.

Further details on speed controls can be found in the reports from NDR, Mercury and Catalog of fines.
