Film office Göttingen pulls the plug: location agency is discontinued

A significant change is imminent in the film city of Göttingen: The Göttingen Film Office has decided to separate from its film location agency, which was founded in January 2024, on June 30, 2025. This agency, which rented offices and archive rooms at Zollstock 15 in Grone, had the goal of making Göttingen known as a film city with its own studio and soundstage. But these ambitions will not be pursued further after a comprehensive evaluation that took place in a workshop on March 12, 2025 with film experts and representatives of the city administration. This is reported by HNA.

The Göttingen Film Office has supported numerous film projects in recent years, but lacked the necessary financial basis to be sustainably successful in this area. Even though the film screenings at Méliès and CinemaxX are often sold out and over 30 film-themed city tours have been offered, there is no monetary success.

New paths for the film city

The film museum that was once envisioned will no longer be realized. Instead, the film office plans to organize temporary exhibitions in the city center to keep Göttingen's film history alive. Support for projects by production companies should continue, but without the aim of establishing Göttingen as a permanent production location. The film office has also announced that it will work to preserve the studio building on the Sartorius Campus. A large part of the archive will be handed over to the Hanover Film Institute on permanent loan.

The lack of financial support from the film industry and the city of Göttingen were identified as the main reasons for the agency's dissolution. Nevertheless, the film office remains optimistic and would like to expand the cooperation with Nordmedia in order to examine Göttingen's film history more intensively.

Cultural events in Göttingen

The challenges that the film city of Göttingen currently has to overcome are not small, but there remains hope that the love of film and the support of local film lovers will continue to keep the culture alive. The departure from the original plans could open up new possibilities and bring a breath of fresh air into the Göttingen film landscape.
