Filmmbüro Göttingen pulls the plug: District agency is stopped

A significant upheaval is in front of the film city of Göttingen: The Filmbüro Göttingen has decided to separate itself from its location agency, which was founded in January 2024. This agency, which had rented offices and archive rooms at the Zollstock 15 in Grone, had the goal of making Göttingen known as a film city with its own studio and sound days. However, after a comprehensive evaluation that took place in a workshop on March 12, 2025 with film experts and representatives of the city administration, these ambitions are not pursued. The Filmbüro Göttingen has supported numerous film projects in recent years, but the necessary financial basis was missing in order to be successful in this area. Even if the film screenings in the Méliès and Cinemaxx are often sold out and over 30 city tours on the subject of film were offered, the monetary success is missing.

The once desired film museum is no longer realized. Instead, the film office plans to organize temporary exhibitions in the city center in order to keep the film history of Göttingen alive. The support for projects of production companies should continue to exist, but without the goal of establishing Göttingen as a permanent production location. The film office has also announced that it is used to maintain the studio building on the Sartorius Campus. A large part of the archive is handed over to the Hanover film institute as a permanent loan.

The lack of financial support from the film industry and the city of Göttingen were identified as the main reasons for the dissolution of the agency. Nevertheless, the film office remains optimistic and would like to expand the cooperation with Nordmedia in order to process the Göttingen film history more intensely.

The challenges that the film city of Göttingen currently has to cope with are not low, but there is still hope that the love of film and support from the film friends will continue to keep culture alive. The departure from the original plans could open up new possibilities and bring fresh wind to the Göttingen film landscape.
