Simon Teichmann is crowned Göttingen’s tree climbing champion!

On October 19, 2025, people climbed high again in Göttingen's Levinpark. This year's HAWK tree climbing championship attracted numerous spectators with a total of 18 arborist students and offered exciting competitions for the title of best tree climber. Simon Teichmann took the lead in a thrilling competition with 149.6 points. He left his pursuers Peter Püschel (138.6 points) and Mirko Gahl (134.6 points) behind him and demonstrated his skill in the tree.

The event, which took place for the fourth time, is organized by the arboristics course at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK). This course, which deals with tree biology, traffic safety and urban tree and stand development, has around 160 students. The tree climbing championship includes five exciting disciplines:

  • Retten eines verletzten Opfers aus einem Baum
  • Work-Climb (typische Arbeitssituation im Baum)
  • Ascend-Climb (gesichertes Besteigen eines Baumes auf Zeit)
  • Zielgenaues Werfen eines Wurfseiles
  • Speed-Climb (gesichertes Klettern auf Zeit)

An exciting event for the participants

Climbing training is not an integral part of the curriculum, but many students already have valuable practical experience. Paula Donath, co-organizer of the event, explained that the championship primarily promotes safety, teamwork and precise work in the canopy. The decision to hold the championship in Levinpark came about in order to offer the participants a varied environment. The originally planned Cheltenham Park had to be removed from the program due to closures.

Sustainability in tree care

Parallel to the championship, the topic of tree care is becoming increasingly important in Göttingen. The “Green Gans”, a certified partner for sustainable tree care, tree felling and tree work, focuses on sustainable practices and uses rope climbing techniques, for example, to reach even hard-to-reach areas. Their goal is to work in a climate-neutral manner and to reuse the cut material that is produced, if possible, with no negative impact on the ecosystem. This is in line with the conscious use of natural resources, which is also promoted in the climbing championship.
