Hammer market in Hameln is closing soon: only 5 days left for sales!

The lights will soon go out for a popular retailer in Hameln: the Hammer market will close at the end of the month. This news comes as a real shock to many who enjoyed browsing the shelves for deals. At the entrance to the market, a sign in large letters states: “Only 5 days left”. However, the exact date of the last opening remains unclear, so undecided customers should hurry up to possibly stroll through the aisles for the last time.

The market, which offers a wide range of products from floor coverings to curtains to bedding and wallpaper, still has a well-stocked inventory. However, some gaps can already be discovered. The closure is in connection with the insolvency of the parent company, Brüder Schlau GmbH & Co KG, which was recently filed under its own responsibility at the Bielefeld district court, as MDR reports.

The sale is ongoing

The sales campaign is currently in full swing, but how long this “final sale” will actually last is still unclear. The REThink consortium has already taken over 93 Hammer stores after operations have been severely challenged in recent months. Buyers plan to transport the remaining goods to other Hammer stores, highlighting the uncertain future for many of the more than 180 locations in Germany.

In Hameln, six employees had already been laid off at the end of the year. For her and her colleagues, this change not only means the end of a job, but also a deep cut in the local retail landscape. While the closure is looming, the company has announced that employees' salaries will be covered by the Federal Employment Agency's insolvency benefit through August. There is little consolation for those affected during this turbulent time.

Customers express regret

Customer reactions are consistently characterized by regret. Many have valued the Hammer branch as a reliable point of contact for their renovation plans and design ideas. “It's a shame that we won't be able to shop here soon,” is what regular customers often say. The sale, scheduled for next Saturday and Monday, October 27th, will provide one last opportunity to stock up on discount items before the market closes its doors for good.

It remains to be seen whether the clearing out of shelves will also take place behind closed doors, as is usual in other markets after closures. What is clear, however, is that the closure of the Hammer market in Hamelin opens another chapter in the eventful history of the retail landscape in the region. Saying goodbye to an old friend is not easy, but the hope remains that new opportunities will arise.
