New roundabout in Hameln: construction site brings diversions and changes!
A lot is happening again in the transport sector in Hameln. On Monday, September 29th, construction work will begin on a new, temporary roundabout at the intersection of Schillerstrasse, Fahlte and Reimerdeskamp. The measure is scheduled to be completed by Friday, October 10th and is part of a comprehensive project to improve inner-city traffic management, which is designed as a field test. This reports Dewezet.
In the first week, the old traffic lights and two traffic islands will be removed and work will be done on lowering curbs for new pedestrian crossings. The following week will see the marking work, the construction of the central island and the construction of road dividers. Particularly important for drivers: The main axis Fahlte-Reimerdeskamp will remain single-lane during the construction work, with alternating traffic lights.
Diversions and impacts on public transport
Road users must expect some restrictions. The access from the direction of Holtensen will be completely closed and the diversion will take place via Magister-Herr-Straße. Schillerstrasse from the city center also remains completely closed from the district hall, which makes a diversion via Süntelstrasse necessary. These changes also have an impact on Hameln-Pyrmont public transport: lines 5, 5E and 92 will be rerouted via Lönsstraße and Magister-Herr-Straße, while stops such as “Schliekers Brunnen”, “Fahlte” and “Ilphulweg” cannot be served temporarily. There is a temporary replacement stop for line 5 on “Lohmannstrasse”.
This step is part of a comprehensive test phase that is already underway at the intersection of Kaiserstrasse, Lohstrasse and Wittekindstrasse. The existing traffic lights there will also be replaced by a temporary roundabout. A single-lane traffic route has already been established here in order to examine the usefulness of the roundabout. The aim is to shorten waiting times for motorized traffic and at the same time avoid a costly replacement of the traffic lights My online newspaper supplemented.
Sustainable mobility in focus
The redesign of the transport network in Hameln is not without reason. Well-thought-out municipal transport development planning can have a decisive influence on the quality of life in the urban area. This planning includes an integrated consideration of all forms of mobility, from cars to cycling to pedestrians. The current measures are in the context of sustainable urban development, which, according to the Federal Environment Agency has become increasingly important since the 1970s. The desire for less noise and less traffic in cities is becoming louder and louder. Small roundabouts, for example, are a means of improving traffic flow and at the same time reducing the speed of vehicles.
But what awaits Hameln once these tests are completed? The decision on the permanent existence of the roundabouts is still pending. The results of the test phase at both intersections are expected in the next few months. So it remains exciting to see whether the new traffic routing turns out to be a success in the long term.
