Hameln police launch initiative for democracy education on Bückeberg

Today, October 14, 2025, a significant step forward for local policing in our region is recognized. The Hameln-Pyrmont/Holzminden police station and the Bückeberg documentation and learning center have launched a cooperation dedicated to promoting historical awareness and strengthening democratic values in police work. This initiative is part of the nationwide project “Police Protection for Democracy”, which was initiated by the Lower Saxony police in November 2019. The aim is to strengthen trust between the police and the population and to counteract the threat to democratic structures that is characterized by right-wing populism and violence against those who think differently.

At the signing of the contract at 1:30 p.m. at the Bückeberg documentation and learning location, police director Matthias Kinzel emphasized the police's responsibility to protect democracy. His statements are supported by Jan Waitzmann, the managing director of Bückeberg, who emphasizes the importance of this cooperation for historical knowledge and police work. District Administrator Dirk Adomat sees this as an important contribution to democracy education, which is of great relevance not only for our region, but also for other authorities in the district.

Goals and events of the cooperation

As part of this collaboration, four appointments are scheduled per year for new and current employees. These consist of guided tours and workshops that focus on the role of the police during the early Nazi dictatorship and the propaganda of the Reich Harvest Festival on Bückeberg. In these workshops, parallels between historical developments and today's challenges to democracy are discussed. The aim is to strengthen the police officers' understanding of democracy and to teach them about their role as ambassadors of democracy.

The initiative is part of a larger framework. Police history and political education are researched, in particular the role of the police in the totalitarian state models of the 20th century, the Weimar Republic and the Nazi dictatorship. Through various projects, DHPol's police experts have contributed to promoting understanding of the importance of historical-cultural processes for today's police organization. This reflection is strongly linked to political education and aims to sharpen the judgment of police officers and support a positive attitude towards human rights-based, constitutional democracy.

A shared responsibility

The challenges facing democracy require a good hand and a strong shared commitment. The implementation of the workshops and the intended educational offerings not only critically examine the history of the police, but also send a strong signal against populist currents. It is extremely important that police officers take responsibility even in difficult situations and actively contribute to strengthening democratic values.

In summary, the initiative shows that the police not only stand for security, but also for democratic understanding in society. Targeted educational measures promote trust in the police and make a significant contribution to democracy education - in keeping with the spirit of the “Police Protection for Democracy” project.
