Afghans with confirmation of admission: New hope in Hanover!

Afghan citizens were welcomed again at Hanover Airport today, October 31, 2025. This arrival is part of a controversial recording program that has been revived after a lengthy hiatus. The black-red federal government stopped the program for vulnerable Afghans in May, but some of those affected were able to legally enforce their departure. After all, over 1,900 people who have been accepted for admission are staying in Pakistan and are now hoping to also get to Germany, as Deutschlandfunk reports.

These people are mostly former local employees of German institutions and others who fear persecution by the Taliban because of their professions, such as lawyers or human rights journalists. However, the Federal Ministry of the Interior makes it clear that each of these people must go through an extensive procedure, including security checks, before they can be admitted to Germany.

A look at the situation in Afghanistan

But what actually causes so many Afghans to look for a new life abroad? Afghanistan, officially known as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a country located at the intersection of Central and South Asia. Surrounded by several neighbors such as Pakistan and Iran, the country has a turbulent history marked by conflicts and changes in power. The capital, Kabul, is not only the country's largest city, but also a historical center that has been influenced by different cultures for centuries, as Wikipedia notes.

After the Taliban returned in 2021, the security situation for many people in the country has become precarious. In a country often referred to as the “tomb of empires,” citizens struggle with serious human rights violations, particularly against women. The international community has largely not recognized the country, further exacerbating the situation.

The humanitarian challenge

The Afghan admission program is not only a displacement of vulnerable people, but also highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Afghanistan's population, estimated at around 40 to 50 million, struggles with extreme economic conditions, weak health infrastructure and an education system heavily marked by gender discrimination. After all, there are over 16,000 schools, but access to education for girls remains severely limited. Not surprisingly, Afghanistan has slipped to 182nd place on the Human Development Index - these are the challenges that the people there are facing.

The arrival of Afghan citizens in Germany is therefore part of a much larger puzzle surrounding the fate of Afghanistan and its citizens. It remains to be seen how many more people seeking protection will follow in the coming weeks and months and what support they will receive in Germany. The journey for these people has just begun, and the next challenges are already waiting.
