Inclusion conference in Hanover: Together for a barrier-free future!
The Hanover region is bringing an exciting innovation, as the first joint inclusion conference between the region and the city of Hanover will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. This event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Academy of Sports, is all about the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities. How hannover.de reported, this conference is held every five years in accordance with the legal requirements of the state of Lower Saxony.
The target group includes people with disabilities as well as representatives of self-help, administration and associations. An important aspect of the conference are the topics of digitalization, health, housing and those relating to invisible disabilities. Digitalization will be a particular focus: barrier-free digital participation and new participation options will be discussed.
Specific topics and goals
The conference aims to develop concrete solution strategies and ensure the greatest possible participation of those affected. A central concern will be the creation of sufficient affordable, barrier-free living space. Access to medical facilities and the visibility of people with invisible disabilities, such as mental illness or autism, are other topics to be addressed.
The results of the various workshops that will take place during the conference will be included in an inclusion report. This should be presented to both state and local politicians. Around 100 participants are expected, including prominent representatives such as Dr. Andrea Hanke and Sylvia Bruns, the two heads of social affairs, as well as Andreas Mangelsdorf and Sylvia Thiel, the representatives for people with disabilities.
Digitalization and accessibility
In connection with these developments, digitalization is also of great interest. Like the platform deutschland-sperrfrei.de explains, around 13 million people with disabilities live in Germany. Digital participation is a crucial factor in ensuring accessibility for everyone. A current study by Aktion Mensch shows that only 25% of e-commerce web shops are barrier-free. Initiatives like #BarrierefreiPosten actively work to raise awareness of digital inclusion.
The upcoming entry into force of the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) in June 2025 will bring additional dynamics, as it stipulates the barrier-free design of notebooks, smartphones and televisions. This means that technologies such as screen readers and clear means of communication must be promoted to enable full digital participation.
These developments are not only important for people with disabilities, but also affect older people and people with less knowledge of German. Inclusive coexistence is important to all of us, and events like the inclusion conference make a crucial contribution to this.
