On June 28, 2025, there was a serious accident on the A2 motorway between Theeßen and Ziesar. A tanker truck loaded with over 20,000 liters of cooking oil overturned around 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. This incident led to the roadway towards Berlin being closed for hours, making extensive rescue work necessary. The road in the direction of Hanover has now been reopened, but the exit remains closed to the opposite direction. The motorway police reported a traffic jam that stretched up to nine kilometers in the afternoon and extended to the Burg-Ost exit, which meant an additional waiting time of up to 45 minutes for road users driving there.
The situation was particularly critical because the oil was spread not only on the main road, but also across two exits and six lanes. Drivers who drove over the affected areas caused the oil to spread even further through their use of the road. Fortunately, the driver of the tanker truck only suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for a safety check-up.
