Colorful music festival: SHMF brings Istanbul to Lüneburg!
The 40th Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF) is just around the corner and promises to delight with a colorful mix of sounds and rhythms. From July 5th to August 31st, 2025, a total of 203 concerts will take place throughout Schleswig-Holstein. This year, the focus is particularly on the diversity of music in Istanbul and on the renowned pianist Fazıl Say, who is known for his innovative combination of Western classical and oriental sounds. This is reported by the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg.
Two special concerts await visitors in Lüneburg. On July 11th, the NDR vocal ensemble under the direction of Peter Dijkstra will perform French choral music by Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc in St. Michael's Church. A week later, on July 23rd, percussionist Alexej Gerassimez will captivate visitors with the “Suite of Elements” at his “Night of the Drums” event in the Libeskind Auditorium. The cards are available via the website www.shmf.de and by telephone. A big thank you goes to the volunteer festival advisory board of Lüneburg and the city of Lüneburg for their support of these events.
Fazıl Say: Bridge builder between cultures
Fazıl Say is a master at combining numerous musical traditions. With his special connection to Turkish folklore, which he describes as “versatile and rhythmic,” he brings a breath of fresh air to the classical music scene. As the NDR reports, Say will give numerous chamber concerts during the festival, where he will perform together with well-known musicians such as clarinetist Sabine Meyer and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt. Guests from Turkey, including singer Serenad Bağcan and percussionist Aykut Köselerli, also complement the musical ensemble and bring their unique style with them.
A highlight will be the premiere of a new mandolin concerto by Avi Avital on July 13th. Say himself will present his work “Istanbul Symphony”, which takes up many different sounds and musical elements from Istanbul. His ability to combine improvisation and complex compositions makes him a fascinating artist who is very popular with audiences.
A festival of diversity
The diversity of Turkish musical traditions plays a central role. Say will also present modern octaves of traditions, including Black Sea dances and Sufi music. His long-standing connection to the SHMF, where he appeared as a featured artist back in 2011, shows his constant desire to build cultural bridges and cross musical boundaries. The impetus for this came from the festival team, which selected its works in Istanbul two years ago in order to attract numerous orchestras to the performances.
The SHMF is a celebration for everyone who appreciates the musical heritage of different cultures. Those too Elbphilharmonie With its “Turkish Nights” festival, organized by Fazıl Say, shows the entire range of Turkish music - from classical to modern. Solo concerts and experimental performances, such as “Oriental Dub”, offer a comprehensive picture of the Turkish sound world and its merging aspects.
The Schleswig-Holstein Music Experience will be a festival of sounds that brings people together and touches hearts. If you want to be there, you should secure your tickets quickly - musical surprises are guaranteed!
