New building for the University Medical Center Göttingen: 1.1 billion for the future!

Something big is happening in Göttingen: The new building of the Göttingen University Medical Center (UMG) is progressing quickly. Since the beginning of the year, construction work has begun on the first of two construction phases, the so-called NIKO. The new, eight-story building is expected to be completed by 2029, with operations scheduled to begin in 2030. The construction site is already hectically busy: In the coming summer months, around 650 piles will be driven up to 40 meters deep into the ground to create a stable foundation for the large construction project. There is a significant environmental and sustainability dimension at play here, because the support piles with a diameter of up to 1.5 meters are partly designed so that they can be used for geothermal energy, as n-tv.de reports.

The new university medical center will have a total of 624 beds, including 204 intensive care beds and 31 operating rooms. The planned offering includes an operating center, a heart and neuro center and an emergency center. The two planned helicopter landing pads on the roof of the building, which are intended to ensure rapid patient care, are particularly spectacular. To make the dimensions clear: by the end of the year, around 10,000 truckloads of soil are to be removed to make room for the new medical facility.

Progress and future

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the new building was celebrated on December 3, 2024, at which numerous prominent personalities, including the mayor of Göttingen and the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, were present. This project is seen as a pioneering step for medical care in southern Lower Saxony. The gross floor area of the modern new building will cover around 112,000 square meters, which is almost the size of 17 football fields, as umg.eu found out.

As part of the second construction phase, a parent-child center will also be built that will offer around 172 beds, including 50 intensive care beds and six operating rooms. With a gross floor area of around 38,000 square meters and an investment volume of around 297.2 million euros, this concept aims to ensure future-oriented medical care for mothers and children. Here too, great importance is placed on the integration of all functional areas in order to guarantee the best possible care. zukunft-uniklinik.de emphasizes that areas such as the pediatric emergency room, various outpatient clinics and a surgical children's center will be part of the offer.

Investment in the future

The total costs for the entire construction project amount to around 1.1 billion euros, with the state of Lower Saxony setting up a special fund for financing. Not only the Göttingen University Medical Center will benefit from the planned measures, but also the Hanover Medical School. It is a major challenge that is being overcome here and a good hand in handling these resources will be essential to ensure that the high expectations of the new facility are met.

A high degree of digitalization is also being sought in medical technology. Planned digital infrastructures include systems for room occupancy management and a tracking system for medical devices. A driverless transport system will also be used to relieve the burden on hospital staff. It is clear: Göttingen University Medical Center is investing in a modern, environmentally conscious and digital future and will therefore continue to be very popular in the coming years.
