Elrond in Osnabrück: Back to life without drugs!
In Osnabrück there is a lighthouse for people who are looking for a way out of addiction: the self-help association “Elrond”. This committed project supports those affected in leading a regular life without drugs. In collaboration with NDR’s “Hand in Hand” campaign, “Elrond” will continue to receive financial support in 2025. As NDR reports, the center is characterized not only by professional help, but also by the unique self-help community that enables its members to support each other.
Julian, a 29-year-old participant in the program, is an impressive example of what is possible with “Elrond”. After diving into the drug world at the age of 17 and struggling with it for 12 years, he ultimately lost both his job and his apartment. After two years in the “Elrond” program, Julian has not only overcome his addiction, but is now also helping others by working as a moving assistant. This activity creates structure and gives him increased self-esteem, which many people in similar situations can benefit from.
A strong network
Addiction problems affect many people in Germany, and everyday life is often heavily influenced by addictive behavior, which makes it difficult to quit. Therefore, support from self-help groups, such as those promoted by the Bund, is of utmost importance. These groups not only offer a listening ear, but also a space for exchanging experiences and making social contacts. The goal is to increase the quality of life of those affected and to make everyday life easier without addiction.
But how does financial support for such institutions work? A look at the legal framework of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung shows that grants for self-help groups can only be provided in conjunction with rehabilitation programs. The support is aimed at projects that enable a return to working life and promote the health integration of those affected. Numerous self-help groups and associations are available to provide this help.
A place to grow
“Elrond” was founded in the 1990s and arose from the idea that active self-help can offer valuable help to those who experience themselves. It is noteworthy that all employees, including management, have all had personal experience with addiction. “Elrond” also takes dealing with relapses very seriously; Those affected only have 30 minutes to pack their things if a relapse occurs. This shows the project's determination to accompany people on their way to a drug-free life.
The association is currently planning renovation work on its shared apartment and is also looking for an apartment for an outside shared apartment in order to be able to offer more people the help they so urgently need. The fact that an NDR survey shows that almost a quarter of those surveyed are not aware of any help offers for addicts deserves particular attention. The NDR 2025 charity campaign with the focus on “Life without addiction” is intended to raise awareness of this important topic.
With the power of community and the right support network, initiatives like “Elrond” make it possible to turn lives around and lead people like Julian onto a new, positive path in life.
