France.tv Slash: New strategy for series and a breath of fresh air in the program!

The streaming platform France.tv Slash, which has aimed to appeal to a young audience since its founding in 2018, is currently facing some challenges. According to Telerama.fr, she is having difficulty making a name for herself and gaining a loyal audience. Manuel Alduy, the director of cinema and fiction at France Télévisions, has recognized the need to revise the strategy because, despite artistic satisfaction, viewership is falling short of expectations.

Slash currently produces between eight and ten series every year, each of which costs an average of 1.5 million euros. These series are mainly aimed at the 18 to 30 age group and deal with various social issues. However, the aim is to reduce this number to just four projects per year, but with a significantly higher budget for each individual format.

Planned changes at Slash

In the future, the focus will be on more entertaining content, and the structure of the formats will be adjusted. This means that the series will in future be offered in different lengths, such as four episodes of 52 minutes each or twenty episodes of three minutes each. Alduy has announced that the characters will no longer exclusively represent teenagers, but also young adults in working life. One of the promising new series is called “Phœnix” and revolves around young environmental activists who kidnap children of rich polluters. Another production entitled “Stunt” is about a young policewoman and former street acrobat, while a co-production with Switzerland focuses on girls with superpowers.

Additionally, a romantic comedy will be produced that will be filmed in portrait format specifically for social media. Alduy emphasizes that France Télévisions is not just looking for ratings, but also wants to promote creativity and diversity. Despite the reduction in the number of series, there are still opportunities for new talent and creative ideas in the program, which will be particularly important for the young target group.

The example of “Skam France”

One of the most famous formats available on Slash is “Skam France”. In different seasons, this series deals with the challenges and developments of young people today. In the first season, for example, Emma, a student, struggles with the issues of love and friendship, while in later seasons characters such as Lucas, Imane and Arthur are confronted with issues such as coming out and personal crises. The different stories cover a wide range of issues affecting young people today, reflecting the reality that young people have to deal with every day.

The entire season overview of “Skam France” shows how the format addresses current topics, and the relevance is appreciated by many viewers. Previous successes could help the streaming platform attract new viewers, but it remains to be seen whether the planned changes will have the desired results.

Transparency in the streaming market

Parallel to these developments, there are efforts in France for more transparency in streaming services. As the-spot-mediafilm.com reports, the call for clearer data is also loud at the panel discussions at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous, where, among others, Gilles Pélisson and Yannick Carriou discussed the requirements for data measurement. More transparency could not only help key advertisers and creators, but also bring greater trust to the platforms themselves, which is paramount given the current competition for viewers.

It remains exciting to see whether France.tv Slash can actually increase its viewership with the new strategy. A breath of fresh air could also be needed in the streaming sector to bring these young talents and their stories closer to the audience.
