Train cancellations between Braunschweig and Salzgitter: construction work starts!
In northern Germany, passengers will face some changes to rail transport in the coming weeks. From today, July 7, 2025, several trains will be canceled between Braunschweig and Salzgitter. The reason for this is extensive construction work that will last until July 27, 2025. The regional trains RB46 (Braunschweig – Herzberg (Harz)), as well as the RB44 and RB48 (Braunschweig – Salzgitter-Lebenstedt) are particularly affected. In order to ensure the mobility needs of travelers, a rail replacement service with buses will be set up. However, the replacement stops in Salzgitter-Thiede, Salzgitter-Immendorf and Salzgitter-Watenstedt cannot be reached directly at the train station, which means additional effort for passengers. At the same time, the Erixx regional train line RB47 (Braunschweig – Uelzen) is also affected by restrictions that will apply from July 3rd to August 11th, 2025. Here, travelers must also expect replacement traffic, as t-online.de reports.
The reason for the temporary changes to the timetable is due to significant construction work on a bridge in Drütte. This work is part of a larger renovation project that affects numerous railway lines in Germany. Many railway lines in Hesse are also affected by construction work, as hessenschau.de reports. Commuters and travelers have to prepare for diversions, replacement services and some train cancellations. Highly frequented routes are particularly affected, although the Hessian ICE routes are largely spared.
Railway routes with restrictions
- RB46 (Mai bis 18. August) – Zugausfälle zwischen Gelnhausen und Gießen inkl. Ersatzverkehr
- RB48 (5. Juli bis 15. August) – Vollständige Einstellung zwischen Frankfurt und Nidda inkl. Ersatzbusse
- RB45 (4. Juli bis 26. August) – Teilausfälle zwischen Gießen und Fulda
- Weitere Linien betroffen: RB20, RB22, S-Bahn und U-Bahn in Frankfurt
The ÖBB has also provided extensive information on construction sites and timetables on its website that can help travelers. Commuters and vacationers really have a lot to look forward to! Anyone traveling by train during the summer holidays should definitely find out about the alternatives and the status of the timetables in good time.
