Storm surge on Baltrum: Cars in danger – vacationers act quickly!

A storm surge warning currently has the North Sea coast firmly in its grip, especially the car-free island of Baltrum. The water level is unusually high due to the prevailing wind conditions, which puts holidaymakers there on alert. How NDR reports, the cars in the “P2” parking lot in Neßmersiel are under acute threat. The Baltrum-linie shipping company immediately intervened and gave the affected holidaymakers a helping hand.

Holidaymakers whose vehicles are at risk were asked to hand over their car keys in an envelope containing information such as license plate number, car color, name, mobile number and return date. Anyone who does not comply with this request will have to pay for towing. Around 140 vehicle owners followed the shipping company's call - a remarkable show of solidarity in this tense situation. As Ingrid Backenhaus from the shipping company confirms, this was a one-off event in her three years with the Baltrum Line.

Forecasts and weather conditions

In terms of weather, the situation is not getting any easier: hurricane-like gusts with speeds of up to 110 km/h are forecast. This storm situation, which often occurs between October and April, brings with it the risk of strong storm surges. The German Weather Service has already issued advance warnings and the population is asked to carefully follow the authorities' instructions. It is important that information about the storm surge is disseminated quickly and comprehensibly in order to protect everyone in good time Lower Saxony have emphasized.

The effects of such a storm surge can be devastating: buildings and infrastructure can be damaged, flooding is common in low-lying areas and even evacuations are necessary. A look into the past shows that the worst storm surge in the last 150 years only took place on the Baltic Sea coast in October 2023 and caused enormous property damage, running into the hundreds of millions. Many houses were flooded, mobile homes were washed away and yachts were sunk Deutschlandfunk.

Coastal protection and long-term strategies

The storm surges in Lower Saxony are monitored by the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). This is done in collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) to evaluate level and wind data. It is crucial for the coastal region to ensure the safety of the population and implement effective protective measures. This includes the construction and maintenance of dikes, but innovative, nature-based coastal protection methods are also in demand.

The storm surge categories defined by Lower Saxony range from light to very severe storm surges. While mild storm surges can occur up to ten times per year, very severe storm surges only occur every 20 years. There is a possibility that such events will occur more frequently in the future due to climate change, which also underlines the need to develop long-term strategies.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the weather situation will develop. According to current forecasts, the wind is expected to subside soon, which is expected to defuse the acute danger. But as recent events show, it is always wise to be prepared and follow the recommendations of the authorities.
