Research for everyone: New doctoral college strengthens public health in Berlin

Something is happening in the area of public health in northern Germany! On October 30, 2025, the new doctoral college “New Public Health” was presented at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. This is an exciting interdisciplinary college that aims to advance the research field of New Public Health over the next four years. The focus is on health-promoting and preventive measures that take the entire life course into account. Professor Christiane Stock, the spokesperson for the new college, emphasizes that the impact on our health begins in childhood and extends into old age. This perspective is central to the work of the college because it can be divided into different phases of life.

The first areas of socialization are the family, followed by training and work. The focus is on topics such as workplace health promotion, the prevention of work-related illnesses and healthy aging. Doctoral candidates have the opportunity to carry out their scientific projects in a structured framework, enjoy the support of experienced scientists and actively exchange existing research results. In the first funding phase, twelve scholarships will be awarded for three years each, which represents an attractive opportunity for young scientists.

An interdisciplinary research environment

The doctoral college was launched by the Institute for Health and Nursing Science in cooperation with the Berlin School of Public Health. It offers structured doctoral funding in the field of public health and promotes the scientific analysis and reduction of social and health inequalities. The New Public Health approach is taken up here. Particular attention is paid to creating living conditions that promote health and participation - especially for disadvantaged population groups.

Research focuses on the social, political, economic and environmental conditions that influence health across the lifespan. Structural causes of inequality will be examined and interdisciplinary, participatory and user-oriented approaches will be developed to advance health promotion in everyday life. The social context is also important; Current challenges such as experiences from pandemics, climate change and digital transformation are included in the research.

The supporters of the college

The Hans Böckler Foundation is an important support network, whose mission is to advance scientific work and qualifications in the health sector. The college is based on an interdisciplinary approach, which enables doctoral students to write independent scientific work and receive targeted support.

Professor Christiane Stock, who heads the college, once again emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “The aim is to promote future-oriented public health research that not only explains existing health inequalities, but also shows ways in which these can be overcome in the future.” Your colleagues, who are also in the management – Prof. Andreas Seidler, Prof. Raimund Geene and Prof. Andrea Teti – contribute their expertise in various subject areas and provide crucial support to the scientific community.
