Use of pepper spray at school: students injured – police investigate!
It cannot be emphasized often enough that respectful interactions should be maintained in schools. But today, June 19, 2025, there was an incident at a school on Schützenstrasse in Damme that showed the opposite. At approximately 1:30 p.m., two students got into an argument that ultimately led to one student using pepper spray. In this unfortunate incident, at least one student sustained minor injuries and even had to be taken to the hospital, while other students were indirectly affected but did not require medical attention. A teacher who tried to mediate the situation was able to prevent something worse from happening.
The Cloppenburg/Vechta police station confirms that investigations have been initiated against the person responsible. Not only are such incidents unfortunate, they also shed light on a growing problem in schools. According to reports from Northern Courier Several schools have been evacuated due to similar incidents in recent weeks. A worrying example is the IGS “Four Gates” in Neubrandenburg, where 47 students complained of breathing difficulties. Here, too, there was suspicion that an irritant gas had been used, which led to the school being evacuated.
Rising increase in irritant gas incidents
Incidents at schools are increasing: In Güstrow, over 80 students recently had to be treated for pepper spray, and similar events have also been recorded in other regions of Germany. According to a report by South German newspaper the number of irritant gas and pepper spray attacks at schools in Baden-Württemberg rose by 14 percent between 2021 and 2022. Approximately two-thirds of these incidents are classified as assault, indicating that these are serious attacks.
The news situation suggests that schools in our region also need to pay attention to the issue. Most irritant gases and pepper sprays are readily available in stores and online stores, allowing teens to put themselves in dangerous situations.
Once again, there is a need for awareness raising and prevention. It is crucial that schools and parents work together to prevent such incidents and increase students' sense of security. Today's events remind us that not only the physical but also the psychological impact of such attacks must be taken into account.
