Frigate Hamburg” proudly starts the NATO mission in the North Sea!
It's getting exciting in the waters of northern Germany! On Saturday, July 12, 2025, the frigate “Hamburg” will start operations under the command of Frigate Captain Alexander Timpf. It starts at 3 p.m. and the crew is ready to face the challenges SNMG1 - the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1. This operational group consists of several destroyers and frigates made up of various NATO member states and has an important mission: the protection of shipping lanes in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Atlantic.
The frigate “Hamburg” recently completed its training voyages. Frigate captain Timpf emphasizes the pride of his crew, who not only demonstrated their technical skills during the preparation, but also team spirit and camaraderie. “It’s not just about the mission itself, but also about supporting our families,” says Timpf. The enthusiasm is palpable, and this is thanks not only to the crew, but also to the sailors' families.
Technical details of the frigate
The frigate “Hamburg” belongs to the Sachsen class, which includes a total of three ships. She was built by the renowned shipyard Blohm+Voss in Hamburg and is equipped with the latest technology. With a displacement of 5,800 tons and a length of 143 meters, she is one of the most powerful units in the German Navy. Her propulsion enables speeds of up to 29 knots and a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 18 knots. The crew consists of around 230 men, supported by 13 air crew members.
The “Hamburg” has numerous high-tech features, including the SMART-L radar, which can detect over 1,000 targets simultaneously, as well as the SM2 anti-aircraft missiles with a range of more than 160 kilometers. Thanks to the command and control and weapons deployment system (FüWES), data from the radars and sensors are processed efficiently, so that the frigate is able to operate in complex operational scenarios.
Mission expectations
The deployment of the “Hamburg” as part of SNMG 1 is an important step towards ensuring maritime security and promoting international cooperation. Since its commissioning in 2004, the frigate has taken part in numerous missions and exercises, establishing itself as an indispensable part of the Navy. Escort, maritime control and air defense are just some of the main tasks it will take on in the coming months.
The return of the “Hamburg” and its crew to Wilhelmshaven is planned for the end of 2025, which is already a welcome ray of hope for the relatives and friends. In view of what is to come, everyone involved hopes for a successful operation that not only strengthens maritime protection, but also promotes international understanding. As the commander says: “We are taking this path as a unit, as an international naval structure – that is what we are committed to.”
So let's stay tuned to see what this mission brings! Further information about the “Hamburg” and the entire Saxony class can also be found on the website German Naval Association and in the comprehensive overview Wikipedia.
