New guide: How to protect yourself from crises and disinformation!
At a time when the world around us seems unpredictable, the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) has published a new guide designed to encourage citizens to prepare for crises. Under the title “ Prepare for crises and disasters ", this guide not only offers current tips, but also highlights the dangers of disinformation during crisis situations. BBK President Tiesler expressly recommends this guide for all households and underlines the increased awareness among citizens, which has been particularly triggered by events such as the Ukraine conflict and several flood disasters in recent years.
The new guide now also addresses the dangers of disinformation and the importance of checking information. The question that arises is: How well informed are we really when it matters most? According to a survey, 57 percent of Germans would like better protection against false information. The current discussion about important topics such as the war in Ukraine, climate change and immigration shows that the desire for reliable information is particularly strong.
Crisis prevention made easy
What does the practical implementation of crisis prevention look like? The BBK guide offers numerous suggestions that can be adapted to your personal needs. It is generally recommended to be self-sufficient for at least ten days. But even collecting a three-day supply can provide valuable security. Each household should create an individual list of supplies that takes into account personal preferences and food intolerances. In recent years it has become clear that such preparation is not only useful but also necessary.
The guide also contains valuable information about suitable shelters in the event of natural disasters, nuclear accidents or other dangers. Citizens are encouraged to address expectations for protective measures, particularly with regard to explosions where blast waves or debris may pose a significant threat.
Awareness events
In order to further inform citizens about crisis prevention, the fire department of the city of Wilhelmshaven organizes numerous events. Particularly noteworthy are the workshops under the motto “Well prepared for an emergency” on November 11th and “Safe at home – avoid fires” on January 26th, 2026. These opportunities will take place in the multi-generational house at the Banter Church and are open to anyone interested.
In summary, current events remind us of the importance of being informed and prepared. Disinformation and other crises can affect us at any time, and that is why it is time to take the necessary steps to prepare. The comprehensive availability of the guide in seven languages, including easy language and sign language, shows that the BBK wants to take the needs of the entire population into account. Everyone should take responsibility for their safety seriously and actively address the issue of crisis preparedness. Please also visit the BBK website for further information: bbk.bund.de. A recent study also emphasizes that the desire for correct information is also high among the population. This is the only way we can fight together against the flood of misinformation and prepare ourselves for the challenges of the future.
