Paper boat regatta: Creativity and fun in Wilhelmshaven's harbor!
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, hundreds of onlookers gathered at the edge of the harbor at Bontekai in Wilhelmshaven to experience the 14th edition of the paper boat regatta. As part of the Wilhelmshaven Sailing CUP, seven teams competed against each other with their self-built boats made of paper and cardboard. The goal? To cover a distance of 200 meters with as much skill and creativity as possible without sinking. The fun factor was guaranteed at this bizarre event!
The boats themselves could only be made of cardboard, paper, adhesive tape or glue, although the teams were able to let their creativity run wild and colorful designs were preferred. There were usually two or three participants in a boat and the excitement on the water was palpable. Six out of seven teams made it to the finish line, while one of the boats tipped over at the start line. Despite the small mishaps, the atmosphere was great and the audience experienced many funny moments.
Awards and recognition
The regatta offered not only an entertaining spectacle, but also incentives for the most creative and successful teams. There were trophies and prize money for the first three places: 100 euros for first place, 75 euros for second place and 50 euros for third place. In addition, creative and environmentally friendly boats were rewarded, honoring the teams' commitment to sustainability. This amusing event was organized by the trainees from the Pumpwerks cultural center, who contributed with a lot of enthusiasm to the serenity of the events.
The regatta was not only an exciting challenge, but also a leisure event that was open free of charge to anyone interested. The response from spectators and participants shows that community activities like this, which promote fun and creativity, are very popular in the region. Registrations for participation were even possible until shortly before the event, which ensured a lively and inclusive atmosphere.
Creativity and community spirit
A highlight of this event was the moderation by Gunnar von Oehsen, who guided the audience through the program with his charming announcements. The paper boat regatta is a prime example of how you can create unforgettable moments with simple materials and a lot of imagination. These types of events revitalize the community and bring people together who enjoy not only competition but also creativity and productivity.
Although the autumn market in Remels, which took place just a week ago, was also a successful event for the community, the paper boat regatta is definitely a special indicator of fun and team spirit in Wilhelmshaven. It remains to be hoped that such lived traditions will be preserved in the coming years and will further strengthen the community spirit in the region.
